Non embarrassing and ok small family cars
Our main car is an X Trail 2.5 petrol (mx5 is the 'spare')
Wife has decided need a small ,cheap to tax, good on fuel car and can fit two kids and the big one has to go!!
Predicament..I've got to drive the god damned thing everynow and again and I know stuff all about little cars and feel a bit like my life is over
Citroens ,peugots etc noooo.....possibly Fiesta but I think Golf/focus size might be best
Dont mind that little Alfa
Any sensible suggestions (prob 10k budget new/used)

I have a run out edition Focus TDCI on hire at the moment. Other than uncomfortable seats it ticks all the boxes for an A to B car. It has bags of kit, parking sensors, auto lights, satnav, decent stereo with USB on top of wat you'd expect. I just can't get diesel engines though, 1500 revs of power band before it's over. Its like premature ejaculation...just as you get going and things become lively, it's all over (that's what I understand of PE anyhow)

If you look at Fabias, try looking at the Ibiza and Polo too. Fabia VRS is a bit of a heavy lump. Though IMO none of the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia ride properly.
Fiesta TD Si or whatever they call it these days, Zetec D? Thought of trying diesels from a few years ago to avoid DPF, Euro 4, 5 emmissions etc?

We have a top spec Nissan Note. A drivers car it isn't but it's nice inside, plastics feel good. Auto lights/wipers, parking sensors, built in sat nav, mp3, keyless go etc etc
Bonos, its almost british as a chap in sunderland (just one) screws them together. We've done 3000 miles in ours now and it is a good wee performer and hauled a family load of luggage away for a week too.

Fiat 500 turbo diesel. Surprisingly lively, chippable and 75 mpg.
Great handling, and who could be cross with it?

Sensible money would be on a Focus, although i'd also suggest a Seat Leon (I have one) build quality is far superior to the Focus (Wife has one) but pound for pound the Focus will be a better spec so be prepared to spend more to get a good spec VAG car

Well, one that ticked all the boxes was a four year old 318d with 40k on the clock.Basic but very nice and do us for another four years
£130 road tax,60 mpg,stuff all to insure.
Though I am still completely hacked off that this government has forced me to change my car to save a penguin.Lying bar stewards
MX will get the bullet next frigging £260 road tax and about 25 to the gallon. Can't afford to run a teeny sports car!!
