What is it going to be used for?
I know your looking at more expensive 4X4s but Jeeps are worth a look IMO. I've had a couple of old cherokees and they've been 100% reliable.
Petrol ones are thirsty but they take LPG well.

Landcruiser/Pajaro is a good bet you can also look at the 3.1/3.0TD Isuzu Troopers, not heard anything really bad about those, seem to go on for years though would avoid landrover/rangerover if you want reliability, how much I like them they are not the most reliable of vehicle

All depends on what using it for, but would add shogun to that list and also Hyundai Terracan (shogun chassis & merc diesel engine). Would personally stay away from the green oval products far too overpriced and v mixed relability.

4 x 4 vehicle purchase
thanks for the replys gents ....
The vehicle in question will be used just 5 to 8k a year as i commute every day on a bike .
the use will be winter commuting (transit vans dont like snow )
pulling a boat about 20 mile .... twice a month realy light duties realy .
i would also consider a forester xt as iv had subarus before and know if you
look aftem them they do they same to you .
Keep the comments coming .... Thanks a lot .

It's a 1986 Defender 110 in Cambrian grey. It's been modified to take the 2.5 TDi and power steering. There have been a few other bits and bobs done to it. He'd like to give it a full respray but the local chavs like scratching the motors on his street. I did suggest putting motion activated cameras on the roof rack to see who is going passed it.

Had a 80 series that replaced my lovely RR LSE for a few years -- now have the 100 series -- immense cars, will easily do 500k
(the only downside is if you pull into a persons drive, they think you are gonna ask of they want it tarmac'd)

If you want agricultural go for a 40 series Landcruiser BJ diesel ( BJ43 ).Slow but will do a million miles, if you can stand the ride quality.Don't bother with Jeeps, they are cheap and a bit naf tbh.70 series Landcruiser ( HJ74 ) import with non turbo 4.2d engine or BJ74 series with 13 bt 3.4td engine is a cracking 4x4 in swb form.
Just to show you what a BJ74 is:

I had a wee search through Pistonheads today at Landcruisers and was surprised what 6-7K could buy!

It's basically got a hilux engine with two extra pistons. This is what we found out, still a very good engine and gearbox etc.The engines are used in buses in Japan.Plus they have got massive gearboxes. You'd notice instantly if you drive a manual one.Basically a less compromised off roader, compared with the Colorado.

Dunk - I really rate them, don't get me wrong I love the RR products
But as no comparison on reliability and durability
In Afirica the RR dealerships use them as reovery vehicles
I have had the 80 and the 100 series - awsome moter, and endorsed by the (aliban

So is the Hilux the better of the two then, I'm going to be looking for a fairly cheap tow car soon I'm trying to narrow down my options, was thinking about a 2800 Shogun as well.
Cheers Hodgy, what do you mean RR though, I was thinking Range Rover but it dosent make much sense llol

I would say no, has more torque & inline 6 so is smoother. You are better off driving one to see how they drive.Wouldn't bother with the Shogun/Pajero either.
