After ideas please - 3k max to spend...
3k max on a small car - cheaper if possible. Must be 4 door, economical to run and insure.
Just asking for ideas really in case there is stuff i've over looked. Tempted to go back to a Rover as had one for 3 years and used and abused it and it never let me down (already had the head gasket done when I bought it). However if it was possible i'd rather have something much more modern but doubt the money will get me that.
This is going to be used mainly for ferrying the kids about and trips into town. Don't need my Passat any more as have the Pathfinder for when we all go out so pointless having 2 big/family cars to tax and insure/service.

Oh and forgot to add big miles = no go! So a Focus for £3k is probably going to be ruled out, especially if diesel.
I'm looking at more Fiat Panda size, the new ones. I do like them little 100hp sporty ones though

It does and i've hankered after one for a while but the Mrs will kill me for even suggesting it after saying we need to have something cheap as a run around Its got 195 tyres on it
Will get her to do an insurance quote but think that will make it a no goer unfortunately
So back to reality...

Exactly, and therefore not cheap to replace compared to most small cars.
Best insurance quote she's had is £340 from Gary on here so that's looking good.
However looking at Fiestas about the same age can get some nice tdci ones for about the same money and they now seem to be just a smaller Focus and she likes them. Although she wants one of those new Fabia vRS's so you can see what i'm up against
3k I don't think is going to get me what I want and an older car is going to come with higher miles and more maintenance bills.

Fiesta with a zingy motor isn't a bad bet - nice handling, cheap to run and repair, etc.
Zetec S would be the one to go for. Not sure about the diesels -IMO petrols suit little cars better.

MG ZR Diesel.
Quite nice looking cars, cheap and should avoid the HGF

Never really looked at ZR's that closely, I used to own a ZT and I know the ZT diesels never had HGF.
Have a look on www.mg-rover.org you will get the best advice on there

Well had a test drive in the Panda today at a main delaership and what a great little car. Felt so nice to drive although the sport button didn't seem to make much difference Came away very impressed by it however it is more than what I will be getting for my Passat so still need to look at 3k and below to see what options are about as the idea was not to spend more money.
So far I have:
Nissan Micra (2003+ shape)
Citroen C2 (but only comes in 3 door - why the hell are these so cheap?)
Citroen C3
Fiat Panda (although only really want the HP100 so too expensive)
Ford Fiesta (2003+ shape)
Peugeot 206
Renault Clio (2003+)
Toyota Yaris
The above list is what i've seen can be had in a relatively new shape and so fairly modern without high miles for £3k or under. I'm assuming reliability wise the Yaris will be the best bet.

Micra looks very odd but the loan one I had was surprisingly fun to drive. The old one was dreadful in every way.
Of that list, I'd go Fiesta. Yaris is reliable but not much fun.
Panda too pricey for what you want.
The rest are French and so will be made of old socks and bog roll.
