Default 1998 Audi A4 buying advice

Going to look at the above today, its a 1.9TDI Quattro with 140k miles onboard. What faults/wear and tear should I be closely checking for on this model?

At that mileage mate, everything!
I bought a bmw 328i with 145k on the clock and later discovered quite a list of things that needed to be replaced. Got shot of it in the end.

I suppose with a diesel, you need to check if the turbo has been replaced. If it hasn't, it will need doing soon. Suspension, clutch etc. Even things such as the starter motor, alternator, wiper motor etc will all be starting to show their age. View with a very wise head on.

Ive got a Passat 1.9 TDi 110bhp SE (B5 model, so basically the same car), its currently got 181,000 miles on it (35,000 have been by me).

Its still very clean and tidy, but I have had to do a few things over the last couple of years. The biggest of which was replacing the front suspension control arms as several of the bushes were worn (mot fail), this cost me £140 for parts and a day of my own labour, good only knows what a garage would have charged !!

Other things that have needed doing are the water pump and thermostat, radiator, battery, brake discs and pads, tyres etc.......so, not really any different from lesser mileage cars.

This years mot cost me only a pair of tyres (£40 each) and the mot (£35)....lovely job.

Hi mate,

I bought a 1998 2.4 V6 to replace my scooby after i got made redundant

Mines done 120K and the bushes are buggered! Due to the complex suspension there is so much to go wrong and the labour bills for changing most of it will cost you a small fortune. Mind you it still drives better and smoother than most new cars lol

I get a lot of comments all the time about how nice it looks though and for £1200 it has done me right

Had a look and a test drive, pure scrape! They didn't even have the battery charged and it died twice on the test drive and one of the tyres had the fastest slow puncture i've seen.
