Instead of UK300. Superlight?

Have been on a test drive in Surrey, although this was a roadsport. As you say once you try one you can see how much fun they are. 1 good point is not having to listen to passenger scream once revs climb, the noise is awsome. Looks like it's the end for UK300 then.

Yes 4-wheeled! Mines a baby fireblade which 'only' gives c330bhp/tonne (about that same a Diablo, 50% better than an STi ), the blackbird or hyabusa engines up that to 450/500bhp/tonne (close to McLaren F1 territory), those really mad can go for a super/turbocharged 'busa engine taking the cars up to 600/700bhp/tonne
But the beauty of the bike-engines cars is not just the PWR (and financial accessibility) overall lower weights (25-30% less than a car engined '7' - superlight etc) mean better handling, faster cornering, better braking, less tyre/brake wear etc. Add in 13,000rpm redlines and an F1 soundtrack and you can't beat it
.....and given the nice dry, sunny weather - I'm off to give my little toy a good hoofing!! Time for some bike/ferrari/diablo hunting
SCREAM IF YOU WANT TO GO FASTER

With a bike engine what is it like on the road, as the powerband is further up the rev range? I did consider Fireblade but was told to go for K-series as easier to live with if not on track all the time. Some new models to be launched on the 9th of this month, R300/400. May go for R300 has (rumoured to have) 1.8 engine, roller-barrel throttle bodies (like R500) and induction kit from R500 with 160bhp so should be reliable, down side is 15' wheels but maybe light weight. Price around 21,000 self build.

Tezza, bike engine is perfectly fine on the road, no problem whatsoever. The 'no torque' thing is crap, my car pulls away in 6th from 25mph faster than most do in second!
You have got 13,000rpm to play with, but can still make very quick progress keeping it below 7000rpm.
The only negative comments about BECs comes from people who haven't tried one!
R300 (ie 300bhp/tonne) for £21,000 SELF BUILD??? My 330bhp/tonne cost £12,700 built (5 months old) and don't forget that not only is there the PWR advantage, lighter weight means faster cornering/braking etc.
Also the r300 won't have the soundtrack

I thought as per EVO mag that Fireblade was around £17,000, how did you get one for so little? Other questions about Blade is where do you get them serviced, do you have to go back to Caterham? Plus did you have to find engine or did the dealer?
Now not sure what one to go for.

Tezza - big difference - mine is a westfield not a caterham. (pretty much the same, only £000's cheaper - you pay for the 'heritage' with a caterham )
The Caterham blade starts at £17k (just - no reverse, one seat, no harness, no paint, no LSD, no IRS etc etc etc etc) but if you want a decent spec you are looking at £20k+
My Westie is very well spec'd - a same spec caterham would cost over c£23k but only cost me £12,700 at 5 months old. It doesn't have 'the badge' but I wanted a car not an image
For less than £17,000 factory built brand new you can get a specc'd westfield mega bird (blackbird engine) with c450bhp/tonne

Servcing - do it yourself (bike engines are rediculously simple, especially pre-95 carbed), or go to a bike specialist.
Engine - best going to someone like TTS who specialise in BEC powerplants - but you do pay extra. If you are mechanically minded, a breakers is a good place to start, as is the back of bike mags. Fireblade engines start about £900 and go to £1200 or so.

Look out in back of car mags, especilly CCC and Kit Car
Try www.wscc.co.uk and go to the 'boardroom'
Try Westfield themselves
Post enquiry on yahoogroups bike-engined-cars list (goto egroups.com (same as iwoc), register, and sign up for bike-engined-cars)
Bear in mind that I bought mine (stragically) at the end of summer when prices are 'relaxed' - it will be a bit more expensive now, but only a bit!
Welcome...
Feel free to email with any questions, and if you are north-west local, come round for a spin

Another place to keep an eye on is [/http]www.findit.co.uk/uk/cars/westfield[/http] - that's where I found mine (wen't for a Xflow - rather than a BEC - but it still beats my Scoob off the mark!)
There's one on there at the moment for £11k

For second-hand Westies, Terry Nightingale is the man.
Considered a Fisher Fury? You can pick up second-hand Zetec or Rover V8-engined one for about 6k, bike-engined ones for around 8-9k.

Agree with Gary re the torque thing.
A Hayabusa lump "only" has 105lb torque. But ours will weigh 400kg. So that's 262lb ft per ton, with a boggo std engine. A scoob would need 340lb ft to match it. But would also need around 600hp to match the power to weight......
Hmmm, turbo...............

Most of the guys who run this type of car in the local sprint and hillclimb have westfields. Caterhams just look too gay (for want of a better description)! Also I think the westfield is a bit roomier in the cockpit. Another good engine is the vauxhall 2 litre, or perhaps you could put a VTEC in there? A couple of guys had V8's which look and sound awesome. The only problem is wheelspin in 4th in the dry I don't know the spec, but the engine in one of them revved to 7500rpm!!! V8 idle with a blistering top end scream, what more could you ask for? It did the 1/4 mile in about 12 seconds on a slighly curving public road.
With regard to a bike engined beast, consider the kawasaki 1100 engine, someone else here had a turbo'ed one in a ....wait for it......Fiat 126!!!!! Talk about mental!
PS. Isn't Johnfelstead selling his westfield?

Toerag - V8s sound the nuts (or used to before EU intervention), but the problem is they weigh SO much. The engine alone weighs as much as my car. Add in extra strength for extra weight and it is really quite lardy, which not only hits FWR (less than my blade unless heavily tuned) but also hurts corning, stopping, starting, feebeack etc etc. Nice idea, but misses the point of the '7'.
Weight is the big USP of the BECs, and thus one reason why they are becoming more popular! Car engined cars weight 25-50% more, and thus need 30-50% more power to keep up which bearing in mind the busa engines push 180bhp, a car engined 7 will need 230-270bhp to try and keep up (unless its got £20,000 worth of CF/Magnesium etc)! and still loose out dynamically through higher overall weight. ...and still won't sound as good
scream if you want to go faster
