Yep - a remapped 335d/535d get a max of 350bhp/510lbs-ft but then a 335d weighs 1600ish kgs - an A8 4.2TDI is an eight pot diesel and weighs over 300kgs more.

Still a fine cruiser though.

OK I probably have less ooomph than you but I love my 530d in the wet - it is a hoot - much more rear end lairy than the 911!! In snow and ice you have to turn the traction control off otherwise it won't move as you say.

Surely fitting an LSD and appropriate tyres would make the remapped 535d more manageable?

I have never owned an Audi - but I have driven plenty. I have never yet driven one I enjoy.

I quite like being a passenger in one - they are good enough.

I have owned four BMWs, two were OK, two were brilliant but I loved driving all of them!

Alan - they must have been cr4p BMs then. IMO they steer better, have better engines, don't use FWD for low end models, are better on fuel and faster than equivalent Audis.

Take the 330d vs A4 3.0TDI (nearly got a 330d but found a nice 335d...);

The 330d is quicker, more powerful, much better on fuel, much lower emissions, better balanced, faster, a fair bit lighter and has much better steering.

The A8 is a bit different - IMO it doesn't compete directly against the 7 series (bigger, more luxurious, etc for the Audi) and the biggest engine you can get in diesel form is the 40d - basically the 35d unit with a wee bit more poke. The A8 has a far bigger engine!

BMs are a hoot in the wet - just not much fun in snow - that's when a 4x4 is needed. Fitting winter tyres to the BM this year - makes a massive difference.

Turn off all traction in a 535d/335d and you can have a LOT of fun. Tyres get munched though.

Alan - and of course in thirty years time you will be able to take your BMW back to BMW Classic to get a full factory re-manufacture.

I am not sure Audi will be offering such a service
