E320 CDI with knackered engine
A mate has a 2001 (I think) E320 CDI with 150k on it, not the tidiest but looks reasonably smart or would do with a tidy up, anyway the engine is a bit poorly, he has a new car and is wondering what to do with it, similar ones go for 5 grand or so so was wondering what the best way of advertising it would be and how much it is worth.
The engine runs but there is a problem with the injectors so it spews fuel out and it emits clouds of stea,, bottom end may well be ok but at a minimum its a heads off job, possibly new heads but I would err on the side of getting a replacement engine.
I am thinking its worth two grand or therabouts if someone can lay their hands on a replacement unit for a grand or so it would be a cheap car, dont know what swapping units is on these, I would be thinking its a fair old job !
Your thoughts ?

Are you sure thats whats wrong with it?
I have got a 2007 Sprinter (new shape) with the 2.1 CDI engine and had the exact same symptons it was the particulate (sp?) filter and injectors at 150,000 miles.

Sounds like the injector seals to me. Anyway, even without this problem it's worth far less than £5k. And like STi-04 says, real rust buckets. Mine had bonnet, tailgate, front wings, 4 doors, and rear quarters replaced by MB under warranty. I sold it !!! Shame really as it was a great car for comfort and nice to drive.

Went and took a look, the car has the obligatory rusty front arches and a couple other spots, it needs a damn good valet as well, had a look under the bonnet and it was like Diesel Armageddon, er, how can I put this, the no 4 injector had become a kind of tethered rocket and burst through the engine cover, it seems to have killed the thread on the injector where it goes into the head and previously it had been leaking past the seals like LC Geezer said, I suspect that someone repairing it didnt doa good job, didnt clean it up properly or something and they bollocksed the thread.
So, I suspect its a helicoil job, or a head replacement but either way it will need to come off.
