I wouldn't quite stretch to that, but it is seriously retro cool

That price is ludicrous. I am sure there's nothing wrong with the car at all and it's nice to have the 1-owner FSH, but you don't need to spend anything like that much to get a similar vehicle. It's worth about half of what they're asking.
I sold mine with 25,000 miles and the desirable 185bhp factory-fitted kit in November 2008 for about 13K (as per my Avatar). Prices have increased a bit since, but not by that much! I know of another very similar (but in-period RHD converted) well-known magazine-featured car that could be had for about 13K or so.
Only a loony would pay 35K for one. Just imagine what else you could buy for that money.

My mate is busy building one up at the moment, bought a GT-T with a rusty shell and bought himself the most minter of mintyness Renault 5 campus he could find (iirc around 30k miles)
The shell has been fitted with a cage and is due to be painted next week, iirc he also bought some volvo that is donating the engine to go in his project.
I never liked the R5 cars when i was younger, and i don't really like them now, my mate loved them though, personally i think its all going to end up a bit "dont meet your heroes" type of thing for him, he had a turbo when he was younger, but he says that this new one will be the car he always wishes he built as a youngun.
Its going to blow over in the wind, fall apart, loose all its coolant and constantly break down, until he gets shot of it.

Not true. The Never Say Never James Bond car driven by Barbara Carrera was a Turbo 2 and identical colour spec. to this one. Here's the car chase clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWQHlNaBVRM
Its mechanically identical alloy-panelled 5 Turbo predecessor (i.e. "Turbo 1") could well be worth 30k in perfect condition, due to its rarity (half as many made compared to the Turbo 2) especially in Olympic Blue with funky blue interior, as well as possible historic rally Group 4 eligibility. These really are difficult to find in perfect condition: a guy I know with that sort of budget has scoured Southern France for various cars he has seen advertised, but none of them were up to scratch.
The mainland European market has a much higher price level for both models than the UK: many LHD UK cars have been sold there in recent years (mine included). In fact I've just checked a popular French website and seen that most decent T2's are now advertised for around 22K, and T1's for anything up to 40K
Looks like I just missed the boat with selling my T2 for 13K in late 2008! C'est la vie. Still, I only paid 6.5K for it back in 1994 and got free motoring out of it for 14 years, so mustn't grumble.

Think this is the one that was road tested in this months Classic Cars, their final comment is along the lines of it raises the bar for prices for this model. Which I took to mean - overpriced

Not sure whether I'm being out of order by saying I wouldnt pay more than about £150 for it? Its an almost 30 year old car! I can't see why it would command such enormous money for something that, in my very humble opinion, isn't that special!?

The US vendor doesn't actually realise what he's got. It's Number 27 of only 200 "8221" Turbo 2 Evolution Group B Homologation examples built by Alpine in early 1985 to allow the awesome Maxi 5 Turbo to go rallying. Although they aren't any faster or more powerful, they do have some bespoke parts and a slightly larger longer stroke engine (1423cc compared to 1397cc) than a regular "8220" Turbo 2. And obviously it's rarer than a regular one. In total they made 1820 Turbo 1's and 3167 Turbo 2's of which only 200 were "8221" models.
This one's a bit spoiled by the funny headlights and seats, but is clearly in excellent condition, so worth the money.
