Mate has one, thinks its great, but to me having been in it its just an overweight tank that costs a mint to service and maintain with over £100 fill ups and mpg that even a 450bhp Evo can better!

we have one and it's a fantastic car,327 bhp goes well for a big car and is great on the motorway quiet and comfy the only draw back is fuel it averages about 20mpg and is roughly a £100 to fill it but our old pajero was doing about 25mpg so not a lot of difference

I have a 4.6IS v8 and to be honest its a fantastic motor, mileage claims here are fairly realistic, Ive seen 24mpg on a long haul from Kent to Belfast via Holyhead/Dublin and some of that was horsing on rightly.
Servicing is ok but you need to remember these were motors that cost (in our case) 60k new and have twice as many cylinders as most normal motors.
New tyres for my beastie from Kwik fit are 1500 per set of run flats, I use a local tyre guy and got my last two fronts replaced for £206 all in. Rears are a little more expensive as they are wider.
Oil, uses pretty much twice as much as the wrx, twice as many plugs, bushes need replacing earlier than the wrx due to the weight. Air filters etc are cheap though, generic ones do the job rightly.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is to find one with a sound gearbox, there are more than a few out there with issues, a rebuild starts at £1500 and a replacement is £5000.
Powersteering pump can be weak and costs a few hundred. The alternator is water cooled and is silly expensive for what it is, no change from a grand from dealer, 400 ish from GSF and Eurocarparts.
Interior is bombproof bar the digital display, again its easy to check if it is working, fauty ones will have pixels missing.
Another nugget of advice, full service historys are great and are mandatory if taking out an extended 3rd party warranty (I did at £45 per month) and can help indicate if the car has had any severe problems in the past and if any parts were changed (Dealer can give you a print out of all work carried out on their premises)
Finally, Id say go for it, they are a fantastically large, comfortable wagon that actually gets round corners well and gets off the line like you wouldnt believe for its size and weight, never stick a tenner of fuel in her (always more otherwise it will feel as bad as the wrx) and you wont be disappointed.

What age are you looking at? I chopped in my STI for an 02 plate 4.4 V8 six months ago as I needed something that I could fit my huge dog in.
Drove from Devon to Kent at the weekend and got 21mpg (mostly motorway miles).
Pulls well (0-60 in about 7.2 I think) and is a very comfortable ride. Insurance was roughly the same as my 02 STI however I didnt bother to look around, just rang up my current provider and transfered over. Massively miss the Scooby though now and am already thinking about buying an old sh1tter estate for the dog and getting something else to get my heart racing.
I have found www.x5drivers.co.uk very friendly and helpful. Might be worth popping in there if you havent done so already.
Good luck with whatever you go for.

Nice to drive for a 4x4 best mpg I got from my 4.4 was 19mpg tyres can be a pain in the **** this was the older model though. If you drive hard it can drop to 7 mpg. I much prefer my current Range Rover V8 which is an old one (p38) but I have no idea why. The comms pack was a bit of a pain on the older x5, loads fail but I do not know if this has been fixed on the newer models.

I love the big petrol ones, they are so rare compared to the Diesel but are they any better, the diesel seems to pull quite well and do you end up going that fast in such a big car, 7.2 to sixty is quite quick but for that kind of fuel outlay I would want more than that, even the diesel ones arent that economical due to the size and weight and as they get cheaper ond older and fuel gets more expensive, coupled with the 400 odd quid VED I really couldnt justify the extra expense over a diesel in that type of car for a second or two off the 0-60 and a lovely noise.
Still the difference in price between a petrol and a diesel will buy a lot of petrol I would imagine.
I think the image of these has got better of late, newer and ruder four wheel drives make them look quite restrained and they have always been decent looking things.
