Seriously missing my 99 ppp'd uk turbo but have recently purchased an audi S4 avant which is more child/family friendly, whats peoples thoughts on these?

Standard they are 265bhp and 295lbft and so far i know they are dead easy to tune to 310bhp and 350lbft for very little.

Does anybody know the 30-70 in gear times for these cars?

forgot to add - just make sure you've got some deep pockets. If the turbos go, it's two to replace, not one. I loved mine, but I was going through an "armchair" phase. The build quality of the Audi has ensured that I won't ever go back to a Scooby (although I do miss the sound!)

Yeah know about the turbos, but if they do fail its a good excuse to put a pair of ko4's on from the rs4 for an easy 450bhp, and also been on rs246.com but wanted to here some owner views so thanks for your input.

I know what you mean about comparing build quality but the impreza i sold for the audi was seriously sorted in the handling department and i feel would rings around the avant, but then i cant have everything and kids are more important unfortunatly!

Still cant find a 30-70 time anywhere for the s4 avant though?

Goto MRC, they get some great performance with their custom remap with exhaust, 330bhp and nearly 400lb ft torque for less than £1200 if everythings working well.

I'm looking to get one in a few months to replace my mazda as we really need two practical cars (two dogs) I am not too bothered about mileage so may get one above 100+ and then stick get some KO4's and decent suspension. In fact most for sale are 100+ miles.

I just love the sleeper look.

Thats where im going, 'mrc' they seem to be well respected among the b5 s4/rs4 owners, cant wait to unlock a bit more performance! The ko4 swap isnt cheap though, i reckon budget £3000 for that as its engine out and buying decent turbos and labour but everything can be done cheaper if you know someone with the know how.

Lovely refined cars inside and out though, leather, cruise, climate, etc, and definatly a world apart from my 99uk turbo, and the power delivery is very linear and deceivingly fast pulling hard in 6th from 25mph all the way to the limited 155

What clinched the deal for me is i didnt realise it has the same engine as the audi rs4, with only a reworked head, (bigger inlet valves) and just different intercoolers and turbos, the pistons are forged as standard and there are many owners running well over 500bhp with standard internals, and i think the mrc car which can be found on you tube gaining on an R8 round the nurburgring is running 550bhp has been running on stock internals for quite some time, tough old motors!

Yeah thats the same blue 550bhp+ MRC tuned S4 running hybrid KO4's with seriously high boost that hit a genuine 198mph at vmax a year or so ago.

Check this out...he takes it easy off the line, then hits the corner hard before passing everything (including a 550bhp Diablo) on the long runway....

Old man had one years ago. Nice cars, and thanks to the 2 turbo's, there is almost no lack at all. Low to mid-range Torque is awsome, but I always felt the top end was a dissapointment. Maybe a re-map would sort this? But he's never been into modding a car in anyway what-so-ever. Have tried to get him to get a Milteck exhaust on his R8, and his RS4 before that, but he won't.

The problems with the B5 S4 are IMHO.

Dull lifeless steering
Sloppy gearbox
Over-servo'd brakes
And seats as hard as bricks.

Still, one of the best `Q` cars around however. Will be you to A to B as quick as most things.

Seen that mrc clip must of felt quite an acheivment leaving the diablo, 911 turbo, ultima etc!

Agree on the steering feel, not quite the same as my impreza, but even that wasn't the last word, my old corrado vr6 i felt was better than the impreza for feedback but i dont find the seats to hard, gear change quite a long throw but not sloppy, brakes are a bit grabby but pretty happy with it really, at least i can put the boy in it and not worry about rattling him to pieces.

Wasn't impressed by the performance when i first drove it to be honest but its power delivery is effortless with no lag whatsoever, and is deceivingly fast so probably is almost as quick as my old classic just doesn't feel it, a remap for £500 will soon sort that out mind, 320bhp and 360lbft

Maybe it's an image thing? It doesn't exactly scream racer does it. Maybe it's too tame in its looks, other Audis also take the lime light away from them. there are fast Volvos and Saabs out there but they again have a plainer image. omo.

They are a great Q-car. Was shocked after being in a Scooby for a few years.
NO attention at all.

The only scalp (which in all fairness just made me chuckle) was some chav in a Riced up CRX. I had my Labrador in the boot.

He tried to overtake (being a twit in all fairness), so I put my foot down. All he must have seen was my dog's face going past him again!!!

Did like mine, but just got VERY boring. Glad I scratched the "itch" though. Might move back into a BV8 RS4 one day - not for a while though tbh.

Going through a bit of a phase at the moment of buyind a perfectly good car and then selling it for no reason for something else, i think having 3 cars in the household, partners car, my diesel van which i use for daily hack and a weekend toy is maybe to much? And i dont really need the use of a van anymore so im thinking sell my van and the s4 and get a sporty diesel. any suggestions? Budget £6000.

Need to keep at least 35-40mpg a priority and needs to be sporty,fun also, so far im thinking:

Bmw 330d sport,
Golf gt tdi 150,
Audi s3, would these do 35mpg on a run?

Not a chance with the S3 getting 35mpg, unless you drive like Miss daisy is sat in the back.

I have a Golf GT Sport 170 TDI, that gets 38mpg, with short runs and a lead foot.

BMW will be very ropey for that budget. Golf would be a mk4 and therefore handle dreadfully.

I'd get a Focus TDCi with a decent spec for that money and mpg requirement.

S3s are more like 25mpg and again a £6k one will be a pain to look after.

Build quality is dire but the top end sporty diesel Megane might be in budget - good reviews.

The other half has a focus and they've never really done alot for me, bmw 330d sports are early and high mileage for my budget and how are the high pressure fuel pumps on these?

I know where there is a 51 golf gt tdi 130 6 speed for sale for £2500, family have had the car from new but has covered 135,000 miles, dont thinks the service books been stamped up but they have serviced it, cheap car?

I reckon i could get 35mpg out of the s3 on a run at 70mph on the motorway, used to get 39mpg out of a corrado vr6, proper tootling mind you!

Megane maybe but would have to be the 175dci renault sport, is it?

That's the one (the Renault). Bro in law had a lesser version and although it was dull, it was actually very reliable. The 175 is pretty quick and handles much better.

Not sure about the fuel pumps on the Beemers but swirl flap failure is a possibility. Just think you'll have to get a pretty tired one for £6k that will need careful attention. Great cars though.

My sister has that Golf (high spec with leather and everything) and likes it a lot but that is a lot of miles. They can take the miles though and one thing the mk4 has in it's favour is build quality - it's very good.

S3 is good but again it will have to be very tired for that money.

I have the 170bhp PD TDi engine in the Octavia, the older version of the CR version in the golf. With a light right foot, I can get 50+mpg on a run easily.

Sold my S4 Advant MRC tuned running 2x K04's, RS4 intercoolers and more running 440/460 last year and was an animal. The torque and instant power delivery was immense. One if not the quickest and feel quick cars I have ever had.

Interestingly though as said above by stilover I did find the top end dissapointing and wasn't a car that liked to be thrashed. You had to let the gears do the work. Found much the same with my Audi TT as well as the time.

9/10 times I'm happy just pootling about, but when I want some fun I tend to want a chuckable car that can rev and sound sweet which is why I changed. That along with the fact the engine bay is scary and repair bills can be huge. Thankfully they rarely go wrong even with high miles, but when they do expect big bill.

Its and engine out job to replace turbo's.

Would love to apply the same mods to mine as you did to yours, but not had it long and dont whether to mod or not,(will probably map it though)

And am slightly missing my scooby which made me feel invincible, only sold it cause it had a rock hard set up so only good for me not the family, maybe i should of bought a scooby wagon but then always preferred the look of the saloon.

No what u mean about the top end though, thats why cosworth reworked the heads for the rs4 so it pulled hard to the redline.

I had a MY 04 WR Ltd JDM Legacy Wagon. It was awesome and had the build quality of an Audi. 280bhp out of the box. Really annoyed a few big Germans with that one .

It may still be in my Garage pics somewhere
