The M5 drinks ridiculous amounts of fuel it really is shocking.
The smg gearbox on them is not the best and over time it will start to annoy you. Other than that they are great cars, can't comment on the RS as I've not driven one. Out of the two i'd go for the M5 can't stand the looks on the RS.

Depends what you want really.
Hot hatch or BIG Saloon
Brand new or second hand
Anything goes wrong within 3 years with the RS, it gets sorted. Anything goes wrong with the M5, it's not going to be cheap.
The RS will be best on back roads, the M5 will be better at motorways and covering big miles.
They'll both like a drink.
The M5 has had it's depreciation big hit, the RS has it to come.
Out of the 2, for me and my needs, I'd buy the RS.
Just out of interest, what sort of milage are you looking at on the M5, for the prive of an RS?

E60 M5 accelerates properly, but the RS doesn't. I wouldn't take the M5 in the snow without snow tyres, on a bumpy road the suspension lacks travel, and you might benefit from better brake pads. Other than that it is a hugely impressive machine.

M5 Gearbox is shocking, the new facelift gearbox in the standard 5 beats it hands down. SAT i think its called. I have it in my 535d.
I probabl would plump for the M5 though but i like my big cruisers & from the drive i had in the RS last week it reminds me of the old one a bit, all too much power going through the front wheels.
Just imo.

SMG II in the E46 M3 and SMG III in the E60 M5 were the least of my objections to either car to be honest, I prefer them to manual, and with practice it is easy to be smooth and they make the most out of torqueless engines. But I do prefer a nice torque converter auto or dual clutch.

No experience driving either, but I've seen a few E60 M5's being driven hard on the Nurburgring (some being the ring taxi's!) and those things are shockingly quick!
I reckon an RS would prove cheaper to run overall due to holding its value better, but then it depends if you need 4 doors and a big boot etc.

Personally I would go for the RS, however the only reason is that if something big went wrong with the M5 I think the repair bills would cripple me, otherwise it would be the M5 everytime

IF YOU CAN AFFORD THE fuel bills and maintenance ...M5 everytime , I just p/x my E60 M5 for a new M3 , and regrats the change !!
the smg will be better with software upgrade and you need to reset it now and then
mpg will be crap if you drive in town (11-12 mpg), but you travel in style in the M5 , great V10, quality cabin, Hi-Fi, it will be better than the Rs by a country mile...even secondhand ones .
But as mention anything major and you will need a bank loan/2nd mortage to sort it
Get one ( with bmw warranty ).....you only live once !!
