Default X Trail or Outlander or ??

Been hunting for a new car (or nearly new) for ages now and need to change in the next couple fo weeks. Looking to spend circa 20k and would like:

- Less than 2 years old
- Plenty of boot space
- Similar size to a Skoda Octavia
- Leather/Sat Nav etc (decent spec)

So far, I've looked at a number of cars and narrowed it down to the X Trail or the Outlander (Freelander boot too small) which fit the bill size wise and have loads of kit.

There must be others out there I could consider but I'm struggling (Passat Estate not for me, Forrester just felt cheap, etc etc)

Any ideas?

Does it specifically have to be a 4x4 or can it be an estate?

Kuga is a possibility - quite like the look of them but not sure of the size.

Does not have to be a 4x4 if it meets my requirements. Thought the Passat Estate would have been ok but just didn't like it.

Outlander is favourite so far given its size, looks and equipment.

PS does not have to be diesel - car will do circa 6k per year so petrol fine for the right engine

How about a Honda CR-V EX?

They are loaded with leather, sat-nav (with reversing camera) roof etc etc and are a pretty good all-round package.

My mate has a 2.2 diesel and loves it.

The Kuga is pretty small compared to both the CR-V and X-Trail.

The C Crosser and Peugeot 4007 look to be as expensive as the Mitsi so not really worth it

We looked at the Honda and it is well spec'ed but does not have the proper 4 wd like the Nissan or Mitsi -ifI'm going down this route makes sense to have the full 4wd. We will test drive it if the Nissan etc are no good.

Thought about the Legacy (diesel or otherwise) but not sure I like the looks. May give it a go though.

Kuga may be an option with the 2.5t engine!

As an update to this we bought an X-Trail (it's the wife's car) a couple of months ago (Sport Explorer Etreme or something like that)

Given it was a slightly outgoing model (name change and a few minor alterations), we got it for £19k new on the road. Not bad given the level of spec (sat nav, keyless entry, cruise, auto lights etc)

First impressions were that it was practical but slow (and we went for the more 'powerful' 173bhp variant). After a 1000 miles the engine seemed to free up and now after 2.5k the performance on the move is pretty good.

Fuel economy hits 45 on a long run if not caning it, and overall with a mix of driving we've seen 35 - not too bad given it's shaped like a brick!

It's easy to drive and park (don't need to use the reversing camera) and the ride is very comfy (great for my little boy) with not too much wallow through the corners. Feels car like.

Not sure whether it's the tyres (there mud and snow) but it's been great in the snow - no problems at all up hills and has stopped really well despite a fair amount of snow in Leeds. Interestingly, my brother bought a Mitsi Outlander a month ago and that couldn't get up a hill that I've had no problems with.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the car - the main failing being that it looks ugly from the front!!!
