Question Any opinions on this for a buy?

A friend of mine has offered me his 1998 Bmw 4.4 V8 840i. He has owned from new, full dealer service history, dark blue with black leater, fully spec'd, 65,000 on the clock. We go back a long way and he says its mine for £5500.

Going to do some research on the net but interested in opinions.

Thanks,

Chop

Did they do the v12 on the 8 series then?

I'm worried enough about fuel consumption on the v8 so happ to stick with that anyway

The 850i was 5.6 V12 with 380bhp. MPG is urban: 12, extra urban: 18 and combined: 14 Still road tax will still be £210 per year

A mate of mine just chopped his 850i (V12) in for a new Fiat 500 under the scrappage scheme.

These cars are serious money pits, but condition does vary hugely between cars, his was a bit tatty, I thought it was worth more than £2k, but he says not.

Jesus; the Classic Car world was a bit up in arms about that legislation. They worried that it would prematurely kill off many classic cars. I thought they just meant crummy old Minis, Escorts and Morris Minors so didn't see what all the fuss was about. But if people are scrapping old 850i's just to get a couple of grand off an over-inflated dealer's new car price, then that's a bit sad im my opinion.

Crummy old Mini's and Escort's, cant imagine many of either of those are getting scrapped, have you seen what MK1/MK2 Escorts and even ratty Minis go for !

Its cars like the BMW that are more at risk.

When you get to the stage that almost any repair will exceed the value of the car this kind of thing is inevitable. Upmarket cars of the last ten years or so will go the same way. Nothing is fixed these days - just replaced. Who is going to pay to fix a Band-G car worth a couple of grand in a few years time?

They can be money pits, it also depends on how cheap you can get genuine parts. Also with the CSI i heard it's got flybywire throttle but apparently it's a normal throttle cable but still costs a fortune, don't know if that's true.Plus did anyone here see on Fifth Gear where you can pay to use a car ramp for the day ( using your own skills to fix etc ), meaning you don't have to use independant dealers or garages ?.The time to do maintainance etc may take a little longer although the savings were comparitivly alot cheaper than main dealers and a smaller saving on specialists.

£5,500, only 65k on the clock, fbmwsh and is fully loaded with extras then it is alot of car for the money and if it's driven regularly and takes alot of care & attention to the 8 then it is well worth the money. If it has been parked for 12 months/ 2 years or more you could easily spend half of the value repairing/ replacing parts.

Currentley have an X5 4.4 in the garage in a lot o pieces as a timing chain tensioner/guide went, chain slipped and the rest as they say is history.
Not entirely sure of ALL the damage yet but its a 20 hour £2k+ job from BMW just to do the chains !!! so make sure there's no nasty rattles hiding under the hood.

Depending on condition, history and mileage etc if you look around enough you might find a bargain 850 CSI ( 5.6ltr V12 + 6 speed manual ).The engine in the CSI was from the first 750 so mpg is woeful in town and is a bigger pontential money pit.My dad owns a 96 750IL with the M73 5.3 V12 ( not the same as the 5.0ltr v12 )and hasn't cost him a fortune for the length of time he has had really. If you want a big coupe' see if you can get a test drive of the facelift 6.0ltr XJS with 4sp auto & sport mode ( much better looking and more class to boot ).HTH.

Do It, the mileage and history will make this car very sellable in the future and the engine is much prefered over the V12. The engines in general are very reliable and can be found in a number of vehicles in some guise or other. Personall I'd bite his hand off.

Even if you only kept it a short while you could get your money back on it easy as long as you keep the BMW stamps in the service book up to date.
