Alfa Selespeed Gearbox; comments?
All,
i'm thinking of getting the Mrs an Alfa 147, the 2.0 Lusso Selespeed model.
It's a good price and looks to be well serviced / looked after, but just wonder if anyone has had any experience of the gearbox / car?
Gearbox seems to be a bit of a weakspot on them but just wondered how common the problem was?
Kind regards
Steve

I'm an ill-informed armchair expert on these, but have researched them before. As a result I would recommend that you avoid them at all costs. There are plenty of manuals out there.

I had a 156 selespeed last year, it was actualy quite nice to use and in addition you had the full auto mode aswell when feeling lazy... However one morning the gearbox dropped its cogs all over the road in a very smokey, smelly, oily drama. I fixed it very cheaply and traded it in for a manual car.
Probably just get the manaul.

I drove a 156 Selespeed for around 6 months a few years ago, loved the car but the gearbox was rubbish, I found it slow to change gear however the main problem was putting it in reverse, once in reverse it wouldn't come back out without me turning the ignition off, or it wouldn't go into reverse at all, don't touch a car with that gear box

Ahh the reverse issues. Yes i had the same fun. Would sometimes refuse to go in gear or just clunk out. Was told it was low transmission fluid levels, never did top it up. BANG.
Im going to change my stance, i reckon you should by one. They are unpredictably fun and if you own a bicycle you will definately get more use out of it..

Alfa ownership is for people who like to indulge self humiliation and domination. In saying that i think as long as i can afford too, i'll always drive an Alfa, I have no want to buy a car from any other brand.
