Default Dilemma

I was going down the 330s route but due to 'goings on' today I may have to consider a more sensible car probably looking between a new Golf Gti or new S3? Golf is getting good reviews and is probably about 5k cheaper but isn't as quick on paper. Would appreciate comments and advice or any alternatives to consider. When I say 'sensible' I'm refering to road tax, insurance and mpg. I know there is a thread below on S3's but the question here is a little different, how much would I notice the performance between the two?

Thanks.

Is this a company car, so do you have to buy new?

Private purchase which hasn't necessarily got to be new, just a perfectionist but open to suggestions.

I did a back-to-back on these two cars (well, a mk5 GTI).... and to be honest, over the same route, yes the S3 was slightly quicker.

Build quality was very good in the Audi, BUT I couldn't justify the price difference between the two. I'd look at a mk6 GTI to be honest. IF, of course you're looking at price only.

Don't get me wrong the S3 is a fantastic, but the GTI is brilliant for the money....

All imho, of course
