I'm looking for a motor for towing my Scoob on a trailer.

Requirements:

* No more than 3 years old
* Diesel
* Manual
* Plenty of room for passengers and "kit"
* Priced around 12k'ish

Had a mooch round a few dealers at the weekend. Out of the Mitsi L200, Toyota Hi-Lux, and Nissan Navara it was the Navara that I liked the most.

Any other suggestions/recommendations?
What do you guys use?

We used a Shogun to tow the ESC Time Attack car last year, made an excellent tow vehicle with an Auto box. We also towed it with my Renault Traffic van, and I would definitely go with an auto gearbox for towing.

tried em all i am deffo a fan of the navara n mines n auto its awesome
used l200..crap..hilux..poor imho, vans etc,
had a d22 navara then a d40, then a pathfinder now beck in navara d40 all the nissans have been great
mines remapped 200 horse and 350lt lb of torque

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

The Navara is certainly the one that's interested me most so far. I'm running a 1.9 TDi VW Caddy van with DSG at the moment (remapped of course ) which I love and I'd prefer not to sell but it just doesn't have the towing capacity for a Scoob and a trailer.

I'm beginning to wonder whether an auto is the way to go now though, taking into consideration the replies I've had so far.

I've use my Pajero to tow a mixture of vehicles and think its great, older than the 3 years though and not sophisticated by modern standards. I'd recommend an auto everytime, I had to use a manual Nissan 4x4 Terrano once, and had to work the box to keep up a steady speed.

My choice would be
BMW 530d Touring (only 2000kgs braked) but seen a few towing cars,
VW Touareg 3.0d Sport
or maybe a Range Rover, but slightly older.

BMW 530d Touring would be my choice, i towed a mk1 escort with a old omega v6 pulled it with ease,a pick up type 4x4 would be handy for throwing jerry cans/ tools ect in the back instead of a boot of a car,and autos are a lot nicer to tow with

XC90, XC70 or a V70 awd.
The XC90 is good on fuel compared to other large suv types. it is very light due to its monocoque construction.
Touraeg or allroad too.

I'm surprised the Volvo Xc90 is only 2250kgs braked and the Nissan only 2600kgs (2.5 TD) any of the proper Land/Range Rover family won't be happy if it's not over 3400kgs !!

Have you thought about a Landcruiser Amazon ?, they are going to be more than 3 years old though ( around 01 or 02 plate), for the price you are thinking of. If you can find one with a 5 speed manual box that should improve economy a fair bit.Also with these it's quite legal to have a tachograph fitted in.

12k was what I had in mind to spend but I'm happy to pay more for the right motor.

I went to have a look at a couple of possibilities last night....

A black 07 plate Navara Aventura, Manual, 29k miles, £12,995
A Greeny/Silvery 55 plate Range Rover Sport, Auto, 49k Miles, £22,995

If I'm honest I preferred the Navara! The wife was pleased about that.

Rill do you want a 4x4 where you don't want to have leather etc, so you can put some bits and peices in and go or were you thinking of something more luxurious ?.
