I've got one of these on my Octavia vRS. It is the older PD type diesel engien though and I've had a few issues with the filter.

I'm lead to believe that the Common Rail engines fare a little better.

I wouldn't have a second had one though as I was planning on buying my co. car after the lease ends but think I'll get a petrol next

I've had problems with the common rail too not as much as the PD, not the cheapest of jobs either, I think this may push people away from derv's too.

They block up if you do mainly urban trips. And they can block up if you do mainly motorway trips too!

The pressure sensor across them fails. I'm on my 3rd in 2 years.

There are a few cars on Briskoda where they have had to be towed to a dealer to unblock or change the filter.

Not a major issue for me I admit, but it would put me off a car out of warranty!

Lots of discussion about it on the Audi forums. Allegedly they can be cleaned out by driving round in 3rd gear at high revs, but it seems some people don't have cars that suffer at all whilst others have a nightmare with it!

Matt,

The regeneration works to a point but never totally cleans them so over a period of time, the regeneration fails to clear them and they clog. Under optimum conditions, this should be 10+ years but there are some who do not drive them under optimum conditions...

You are very lucky man then. VW issue stickers to go onto the front screen now to advise how and what to do if the light appears.

never had a problem with my 170 a4,27k and touch wood all's been perfect.it's been remaped for the major part of those miles as well.
the car regen's every 500 miles or so and when it does i just take it for a good run to help things along a bit.

Well seen as VW have been releasing technical bulletins left right and centre I think that speaks for itself.

For god sake man, just say..........

Pretend I don't work for VW and have never seen the bulletins, and I don't have the warning stickers on my car.

Can you please explain the technical problem, and what I should do if the light does come on on my car.

Hi stilover, there are various technical issues with the DPF system, main one we keep getting is the differential pressure sensor get clogged or partially clogged with carbon/soot, giving a false reading showing that th DPF actually is at regeneration point.

In the first instance if the DPF light comes on then, best bet is hold the car in 4th gear at bang on 2000revs (as reading the Measured Value blocks I find this is the fastest way of getting the filter load down below 10%, and therefore will knock the light off) I find a nice 50mph A road will do the trick.
If the engine warning light come on and the glowplug warning then wouldn't recommend driving as can cause DPF to fill up and then no regeneration will be possible and DPF will require replacement (not cheap), give VW assist a call number on rear of tax disc holder or hand book front.
Hope this is helpful

One of the guys at work has just purchased a 2004 Golf TDI with the PD engine, fsh with 68k from a main vw dealer, 3 weeks later and one piston through the block (unmodified) he wasnt impressed (doing 2.5k on the m/way) so good job that he took the extended warranty, vw were not impressed as they have to give him a new engine

Not heard of that one before Tony, Unusual Extended Warranty paid full as they have aroud a £1000 limit, I suspect VW themselves paid for it as it's a major compontent failure.

this is the very reason I bought an impreza over a gti or R32 golf.

having had loads of vw's in the past , I am a true vw nut.

but some years ago bought a mk 4 golf (not some old thing- 6 mths old for cash) ....... try 35 trips to the dealer under warrenty in 18 mths.

useless useless barstewards........ I fookin hate vw dealerships and their attitude of "well its a vw - it'll be bombproof".

and now yr saying they can't produce a diesel engine without a filter fault.

how to fix it- rev the ***** out of it ! You being serious !!!!!!!!!?????????

2 yrs I've been rattling around in my ***** out scooby, bought from subaru- never a fault yet.

subaru and japanese car manufacturers will probably have my business for life.

Hardly revving the ***** of it at 2000revs, maybe if your walking into a dealership with same kind of attitude you are posting on here it's not surprised you had no help.

No mate the 130 pd isn't effected, bluemotion passat's 1.9, very few 140's at the moment and all 170's.
The reason behind it is due to pressure from goverment to reduce emmisions, it could be worse I guess, Look at Peugeot system that requires a liquid topping up and resetting at a charge apparently not the safeest of liquids to deal with either.
