Hi people,

After selling my sti i need to down grade totally and buy a daily driver, always wanted a honda for the vtech buzz, was thinking of a accord type r but want to spend less. Seen civics in coupe form or 4 door which are cheaper.

They come with 1.60 160BHP engines or 1.8 170bhp - Which is better? i dont know much about the 1.8 version is it as good?

hi there mozza, I had a 1.8 civic vts, I think it was an r reg, cracking engine, you have to rev them but it likes it, if you sort the suspension out (I didnt) I'm sure it would be a cracking drivers car for the little money these go for,
try and get one with full leather because the carpet/leather sport seats hold the dust like an old bus,

I dont know if its still going but have a look at honda revolutions forum, there might be a couple of sorted ones for sale on there,

oh and iirc it wasnt very good on fuel, but thats probably because I was enjoying the screaming of the engine

 

i had an eg civic hatch 1600 vtec best car ive had,most enjoyable to drive.was v good on juice and NEVER had a problem with it

 

you should be able to get a decent vti-s pretty cheap,excellent motor,and very spacious.

 

Thanks Taffy, to be honest im pretty lost after selling my sti type r, ive always wanted a honda for that v-tech buzz, integras still pricey, accords type r not many about and vary in price alot - These civics arnt anything to look at and i could use them daily and not worry about it and save the rest of money i made selling my type r.

Not sure what to do, never bought a car i didnt really wanted - im in a difficult position :-(

 

the crossover points of vtec won't give u much of a buzz coming from a type-r,unless u go for a honda type-r,the 1.6 and 1.8 vtecs are pretty mundane,unless u liven things up with a filter and exhaust.

 

am i going to be bored silly? From having 3 cars i will be down to half a car (golf gti mk1 project) i need a cheap daily driving which cant be too rough and keep this aging boy racer happy for now. lol

honda's are pretty hard to get good gains from as they are pretty highly tuned from factory,unless u go supercharger/turbo but costs big bucks.have u thought about a golf/bora tdi,i had a bora 150 tdi chipped to 200 hp and it pulled like a train,very cheap to run,tax and insure.

 

Drove around in a 1.6 vti Civic Coupe for a few months and loved it!!! Great Car and great engine!!! usual sort of VTEC shannanigans but without quite the ooomph of a Type-R but then the car externally isn't shouting much, so its a good sleeper!

I really loved the looks as well. Totally reliable too! then again it was a Honda!

I'd recommend them, the 1.6 when I was looking was always considered the more free revving of the 2 engines compared to the 1.8.

I've also owned a VTI-S 5 door hatchback in pirates black Great motor, though it has the same chassic as the Rover! ( Handling wasn't great on those but a set of Eibachs are supposedly a good upgrade.

As for the 1.6 DOHC Vtec engines B16a2 (B-Series engines were supposed to be one of legendary engines Honda built) you'd get in the coupe is 158BHP, i believe the 1.8 DOHC vtec is 168BHP with quite a long gear ratio so a common modification would be buying a S80 gearbox (integra dc2 gearbox).

I never modified the VTI-S, i loved the look and for the money you can pick them up these days i think is a whole lot of car even if it is a Rover

Came only in Pirates black (Black with a purple tint in the sun) the VTI-S with a bodykit, half leather/cloth seats, A/C, etc.

I'm not to clear on the Civic coupe shape but you can't really go wrong with a B series engine

might go and see one, finding it hard to get a cheap car after having a sti stype r im never going to be satisfied performance wise.

so the 1.8 isnt as fun as the 1.6 but the sounds of it?

Not bad by all accounts, suspension too crashy for UK roads though.

Was just about to go look at an accord type R which was 120 miles away when the owner told me that he didnt have any service history after previously saying it had.

not liking this car search already.

They arnt anything to look at whatsoever the civics that is, but am interested on how they drive

 

why don't u go for a high mileage ctr,engines are pretty bullet proof as long as its got a fsh.pick em up pretty cheap,i had one for 6 years it never missed a beat and was abused daily.

 

my problem is that ive gone from 3 cars to one as i need to save money to pay a chunk of my mortgage off, CTR are still pricey for what i want to spend - it sucks i know but thats life.

 

Had a ('97)1.6 & ('99)1.8 VTI's they also do a 1.6 vtec - not a vti which is around 125bhp

Both cracking cars, engines are good, they do have some torque equivilant to most n/a engines of that size.

the 1.6 revs free-er and gets to max revs quicker. the 1.8 has a little more torque.

I preferred the 1.6 for fun.

Handling is v.good also

Real wolf in sheeps clothing, engine go on for 150k+ miles with even t he head of as long as oil changed regularly.

1.8 has LSD in VTI form, cannot remember if the 1.6 does.

Little to go wrong the 'variable' bit of the timing is a pin in the camshaft activated by a really which changes the timing and gives it the kick up the ***. - -simple but effective

Used to get around 30-36mpg mixed driving.

I had my 1.6 at 8.0K revs in 5th geear - off the speedo which reads to 150mph - realistically i was probably doing around 140 - working out the revs vs gear ratio, not too shabby for a 1.6 and a real shock to the guy in an intergrale i passed in my anonymous 4 door honda civic

 

They are brilliant, reliable cars for the money. The DOHC Vtecs like the 1.6 and 1.8 vtis tend to use quite a bit of oil when they have high mileage, which most of them do.

Unfortunately, they are almost always overpriced - just like the car in that link posted above. I'd be willing to pay about 2k for that car...not the almost 4k it's advertised for. Crazy!

I have had two EK 1.5 SOHC Vtecs, and an EG 1.6 Vti. All were 3 doors, although a friend had a S reg 4 door saloon with the 1.5 engine in it. I liked them all, although I have to say as a car to get about in I prefered the 1.5. Not quick in any way(circa 10 secs to 60), but it never used oil like the Vtis do, it was economical, and actually still felt nippy because of the way the power was delivered.

I really fancy a 98-00 Integra Type R, but since they are also overpriced in my opinion, I'll not bother.

 

yeah i agree they are well overpriced in general, was so happy to sell my sti type r for good money and i thought i would be able to buy plenty of decent cars with 2K but there arnt as many as i hoped.

Am probably going to look at a 5 door civic vti, they look so ordinary but will be better than no car i suppose plus ive never owned a vtech and wanted to.
