Default Classic car insurance, would I qualify?

Have posted in the insurance section, but thought I would try here as well, would my 1990 205 GTI qualify for classic insurance.

Any recommendations for companies that specialise in this?

Most consider 20 year old as been the minimum for classic insurance so 1 more year to go..

My 1986 Golf GTI qualifies the old git

That I could live with, have had a quote for £300 on a second policy, but would obviously like to pay £100 or whatever classic is these days.

£300 is OK but classic policies should be less than £250 IIRC

Adrian Flux or footman James are both good.

Likely to be a fixed mileage policy on a classic.

Have a look in the back of C&S mag for more info on classic insurance

I used FJ for all of the 14 years I had my R5T2. Last year was about 250 quid with agreed value of 15k for max 3000 miles (which I never got close to). I never put in a claim though so don't know how they handle those.

Also please note that you do not get any No Claims Bonus with this classic car policy, so your premium will not drop year by year as you would expect it to with no claims on an orthodox policy. This is worth remembering: your 300 quid per year regular policy will drop as time goes by and you build up your NCB (assuming no claims made, or NCB protected), and you can then transfer that NCB to your next car if you decide to sell the Pug and buy a different car. So if you want to replace the Pug with a modern fast car at say 1500 pounds per year insurance (with no NCB), a 5 year say 40% NCB discount would save you 600 quid per year (and each subsequent year). So what I think I am saying is the classic car policy will certainly save you money now, but it may cost you more in the long run.

I use Specialist Car Insurance - High Performance, Classic, Sports, Prestige Seem to be very good.

I was insuring my old 205gti 1.9 on a limited mileage classic policy years ago, so don't think you will have any problems.

Hmm, not saying you are wrong however this is our experience from some 10 years ago
When we swapped Jenny back to a modern car FJ supplied a letter stating she had been insured with them for 3 years with no accidents or claims - she then received 3 years NCB from the new insurer, Tesco i think, could have been Admiral.

I have just switched to Hagerty

Hagerty Classic Car Insurance

Got a stunning deal to insure all 3 of my classics for less than the price I was paying for one of them before.

I know a couple of other people who are insured with them and no problems to report.

hey also do insure what they call 'Modern Classics' as young as 1991 so a 1990 205 GTi should qualify.

What are you insuring with them, and what deal did you get?

It's surprising how cheap you can insure classics for.

Admiral and More than both quoted me around £240 for my Merc. Adrian Flux insured it for £90 with the same level of cover!

73 Maserati Bora
67 Sunbeam Tiger Mk 2
72 MGB Roadster

All insured for under £500 on a single policy, the Bora alone was costing me that on a stand-a-lone classic insurance policy.

Bargain.

Leaves you plenty left for AA assistance for the Bora

Don't even go there...................!

Joking apart though RAC is better for Classics especially with club associated membership (I have MSA associated membership but I think you can get it with membership of most classic car clubs) as they do not charge extra for European cover and they will also recover the car from locations off the public highway, for example race circuits.

I think the furthest they have had to recover it to date is from Budapest.

My brother took his 1972 Ghibli SS to southern Italy and back on his honeymoon and it never missed a beat. Head gasket's gone now though

That's why I stick to old Mercs.

Tend to be reliable despite the stick they take.

Apologies to the OP for this slight thread highjack.......

The Bora has managed several two thousand mile trips around Europe in the time I have owned it and made a trip around Spain and Portugal in 2007 without any problems.

Here it is in Leon next to an older Maser

Low points in the past have been a head gasket going at Spa in 2000 and in 2006 suffering a full high pressure hydraulics failure at the first check point, of the first day of an event in France.

Nearly bought a Ghibli, it was a question of which came up for sale first the right RHD Bora or the right RHD Ghibli

This is his Ghibli SS (UK RHD, manual, LSD). Still got copy of original invoice:

You old Maser boys like your car-specific private number-plates don't you?

Got a quote from Adrian Flux for the Pug, a little over £200 with no restriction on mods.
