Arrow Run flat tyre puncture - Repair or not?

Dunlop DSST run-flat 205/40w 18 on a JCW Mini

The tyre has loads of meat on it 5mm+. There is a small nail in the dead centre of the high point of the tread.

Phoned a couple of places for a price on a new tyre £180 approx, then ATS said that the Dunlop DSST was one of the run-flat type tyres that they are allowed to repair!!

A few other garages, Kwik Fit / National Tyres, said they are not allowed to repair them

Whats your thoughts, repair or new tyre?

Cheers in advance.

I have read mixed opinions regarding repairing run flats.
Some say no others have had repairs done but i guess its down to the tyre outlet you use to whether they will do it or not. I suspect most will say no in the hope you buy a new tyre instead.
I am having a dilema at the moment as the wife's mini cooper needs a set of fronts and i don't know if i should replace them with normal tyres or go for the more expensive run flats.

I have just got off the phone to my local Kwikfit centre and they are quoting me 147 quid per tyre for the wife's mini

Asked whether they would fit normal tyres to the rims and answer was a resounding no!

Anyone ever used Blackcirles online?

Nik.

Blackcircles use local independant tyre fitters if you opt to buy them online and need them fitting. You may be better off finding out who is a Blackcircle fitter in your area and go directly to them to supply the tyre as well.

Well spotted, now edited. Even at £147 each it's still a shocker!

I've just ordered 2 falken 452s from Camskill - almost £20 per tyre cheaper than Blackcircles and mytyres?

Default Runflats

The wife has runflats on her Mini.
When she had a puncture, most places weren't interested in repairing but a local back street place sorted it.

They're not considered safe to repair because it's hard to tell if the sidewall is damaged from driving on the tyre with no air in it. It may look ok but if you've driving a good distance with it at low or no pressure then it will have been weakened.
Some dodgy places will repair them but it's up to you if you think saving £100 is worth risking the tyre letting go at a later date.

I've got normal wheels/tyres on my Mini now which will be a pain if I ever get a puncture but is certainly cheaper in the long run.

Also just found this though so maybe the Dunlops can be repaired

Dunlop Tires | Care & Maintenance | What is DSST

Blackcircles are £180 for run flats in that size too!

Following on from my first post i received a call from the wife today informing me her mini is now sporting a screw with a piece of plastic attached embedded in her tyre, bugger!
Luckily said screw went into one of the worn fronts and not one of the good rears.
I have decided this time to replace with run flats (Dunlops on order for tomorrow) at a cost of £98 each, which is considerably cheaper than Kwikfits £147 per tyre!!
I would have liked more time to research the use of normals as i'm still reading differing opinions on the net forums, not to mention finding someone to fit them.
Oh well, 2 days before the big day and i'm shelling out on tyres

Nik.

To update, I telephoned Dunlop UK and had a chat with one chap in the technical department.

He said that the Dunlop DSST RF can definitely be repaired, along with the Goodyear and recently (he seems to remember reading) Bridgestone RF's.

He said the only reason that its in the public domain, as to not repair, is that in the manufacturer blurb (BMW) they recommend that the RF tyre be replaced and not repaired.

He said as that BMW have put the replace & not repair in print, he has to put his official hat on & advise replace.......

Got the puncture repaied today!

Pirelli & Michelin CANNOT BE REPAIRED!

Thats interesting as ours are Dunlop DSST so i will ask the fitters tomorrow if the tyre could have been repaired. As they are, they needed replacing shortly anyway but its good to know for future reference.

Yep definitely ask!
As if there was going to be an issue over repair (of a new tyre), I would poss have changed over to non-RFs. But as I know they can now be repaired, I will continue to use them.
Its just nice to know, as its the Mrs' car & she gets a puncture she can get home ok, with no probs.

The cheapest I could find a 205/40w-18 DSST tyre was £193

I have to say that Kwik Fit would not repair the tyre though.
The ATS guy said he had a list of what brands he could repair.

That's good to know, i've not got run flats on mine anymore and am dreading the day I get a puncture as there's no spare and only a can of expanding foam to save me!

GET NORMAL ONES!!! My friend just put normal tyres on his girlfriends' cooper S- the difference was amazing...a much better handling car and much more responsive, leaps and bounds better than the runflats on our cooper S.

We have a BMW 120d M-sport at work which came with run flats.

They needed replacing a few weeks ago, and we were quoted just over £700 to fit all 4 replacements.

He had x4 215/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asyametrics fitted at a cost of £417 inc plus a £10 bottle of tyre repair stuff.....

Mate had one replaced on his Mini Cooper this week for £106 from a local outfit so you can get them cheaper.
