I'm keeping my eye on new shaped X5's. 3.0d versions.

Dealer near me has an April 2008 car is Space Grey in at £42k with 15,000 miles on it.

If it's still there in a few months I might walk in an offer £30k. See what they say. I really like X5's.

RRS are tempting, but the X5's drive better.

how much money do you think dealers have in cars?

better deals are on new ones at the momment as manufacturers are chucking money at them. discounts off cars and low rate finance offers.

What are the real world running costs on them Finchy?

mpg?
Servicing?
Insurance?

Not sure I'd go for a Petrol version, but the TDV8's do sound tempting. As said above, I'd prefer an X5, but if the price was right on the RRS............

Z4's are unplaceable at the moment, the auction is full of 'em and there's tons coming off PCP because of the high RV's, and they're distorting the market too. Supply is more than double the commercial demand ATM.

Unfortunately, Z4 is NOT a desirable car at all, due to ride and practicality issues.

Just advice I would get a price for your own car before you even start looking, because I bet the value is a HELL OF A LOT less than what you want/expect.

Why? Do you need 4x4? I've just put off my friends in the UK from buying the Subaru Outback. Why? Well, they may need 4x4 about 0.01% of the time, so not worth carrying that extra weight about, and paying all that tax on fuel etc.

Yeah, they've got a hell of a lot of 2008 stock to move. They've cut production at the moment, so that they can move out all the 08 cars.

TBH I don't think the 2009 X5 is any different so it will have minimal effect on your resale (it being a 2008 model) and with the discount thats quite good.

It's called choice. Why have a thirsty Subaru Impreza when a Focus TDCI will get you there just as well?

Are you enjoying it? This is probably my next move, although I'll run it on LPG to keep the company relatively happy.

I've got a 2.8 TD swb Pajero MY1997. Probably not what you're after though Cost me £2.4k 3 years ago. In no way bling, but I probably felt less smug driving down the M3 today than the countless RR sports I saw, most of which seem to be driven by morons I have to say Won't lose a grand a week in depreciation either!

just bought a Toyota Amazon W reg after 3 years with an earlier model (lost much less than a 1K a year in depreciation)

awsome cars --- not as flash as the RR's or the BMers, but ultimatly show them up to be the toys they are

but then thats not a problem of you want and can afford a toy

LMAO. Choice? Or stupidity? A BIG 4x4, even with diesel, is expensive to run IF YOU DON'T GO OFF ROAD!!!! Compare a BIG 4x4 with a Subaru WRX, that is rather stupid!

I think the point Stilover was making is that some people buy a car just because they like a particular type of car, I would suggest most people who own 4x4's don't go off road, but they buy them for other reasons, for most if they are honest it's a status symbol thing/fashion thing. They are not my cup of tea personally.

But just because someone chooses to drive a 4x4 doesn'tmake them stupid.
Slightly off topic I never understand why people complain about depreciation in cars, people looking for an investment shouldn't be buying a car or that purpose IMO.

At the end of the day, buy what car you like and be happy

My big diesel 4X4 uses less fuel and is cheaper to service and insure than my old Scoob was.

My new 4x4 pick up will cost me £zero for servicing in the next 3 years and costs me £180 per year road tax, £400 insurance per year and will do 30-35 mpg.
My last Ford Focus was way more expensive than that!

Hardly shabby.

Wink Waht would you have and why - X3.2.0d MSport or XC90 Ltd Editiion Active

OK so situation is due to the Part Ex price of the Z4 - well its more like giving the car back to the garage and standing their with my pants down asking the sales team to all have a go !!!!!!!!!!!

So due to the whole we have left to pay we have got to count out the X5 !!

So its down to the BMW X3 2.0d M sport or the Volvo XC90 Active Ltd Edition ???????????????????????????????????

Any one any thoughts - just not that keen on the X3 and the boot isnt very big - but i guess in M sport spec its looks better - but at the end of it i cant help but thinking that its no X5 after all ???????????

The XC90 without a doubt. The X5 only plays at being a 4X4, it's all about bling and image if you're honest. The X3 can't even play at being a 4X4 and doesn't have the image either so I can't see the point.

The XC90 doesn't make any claims about being able to cross the Moab either but at least it ticks all the other boxes and Volvo's are now in the sub zero section of the cool wall.

Cheers

I like those.

Got a 3 year old X Trail T spec for £9995 (£25k new) about a year ago.Probably worth about £4k now

Didn't want anything pretentious just a good wipe clean car.

Has everything/does everything we need and it seems pointless trading in a car with so much kit for a few quid.Should see us through the next few years

[QUOTE=Jamescsti;8320066]
But just because someone chooses to drive a 4x4 doesn'tmake them stupid.
[QUOTE]

In some cases, it doesnt make them stupid, they start out that way and get carried away, witness the RR Sport that a mum at school has, she flies up at 40 mph, kick her sprog out and then drives between two lines of cars accelerating as fast as it will go.

I've got a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I paid £1500 in January and have it just so now and it needs nothing. Its a thirsty bugger at 4.0 and I've been trying to sell it for £1K for a month without proper interest.

I was going to sell for another Impreza but its really handy with the space and we can all just jump in go anywhere. I'm probably going to keep it now.

Worth taking a look at the British Car Auctions auctionview.co.uk website. e.g. a 1 year old Discovery HSE is about 55% of new price. After 3 years they're 32% of new price - and still depreciating at £500 a month. The 4x4 market hasn't bottomed out yet. Maybe by March? (by which time a Z4 may be a little easier to shift).

It's been fantastic i've recently fitted a full stainless larini exhaust system and some genuine 22 inch overfinch alloys it certainly turn's heads.

I was thinking about an LPG conversion but it was seriously expensive for the supercharged version. I don't do many miles and figured out it would take me about 3 year's to get the money back so didn't bother.
