any one owned an old vw beetle?
ive read bits here and there that the old vw beetle has got huge engine tuning potential compared to most cars so just wondering exactly what it is that you do to them that unleashes the power.
just thinking that pre 1973 ones are tax exempt makes it sound tempting!
whats the best models to go for and engine sizes?

I owned one back in my dim and distant youth My best mate (still) jumped it into a field and twisted the shell and floorpan beyond salvation
It was a '74 1200. I fitted a Vege 1600 motor with an Engle camshaft and all the go faster usual gubbins on it At the time it seemed as fast as f**k, but in reality it wasn't all that really
It is possible to build a reliable smoking hot motor, but it ain't cheap Gene Berg in the US manufacture some serious nice parts, as do several German companies.
The key is installing a decent crankshaft, the original engine was never designed to go over 4k rpm consequently not much attention was paid to high rpm balancing of the major components. No revs = no power
