I saw an '05 in Highgate, N London the other day.

Must be imported and re-registered here as it was rusting and old!

They still make the T2 in Brazil, so may be an import.

Yes, you can buy the them, place near me used to sell them. Until they sold the land to build houses on (property boom). Something I fear might not be happening nowadays with everything is going bust LOL.

You can also get new MK2 Golfs in South Africa (called the Vw Citi ).

How much?

You can buy a proper 'classic' that breaks down as it should, with a proper aged number plate for half their prices!

will admit I'm a closet vw nut. had loads of beetles and old 70's campers.

and brand new modern campers too.

Yes you can get a new- old 70's type camper from brazil. will have aircooled engine.

they are LH drive, sliding door on right. various companies bring them over and convert to RH drive- put camping interiors in.

prob about £25 k. general consensus in the vw world is they are rubbish.

very expensive compared to what else you could buy- i.e rust free auzzie/california genuine imports.

build quality far higher on originals.

new imports are built of such bad steel- you'll see brand new rotten ones.

for 25K you can buy some fantastic 175 bhp diesel vw camper vans, 4 x 4 even- so why the hell you'd chose the 70's version- god knows.

mind you was never a fan of sitting in fields and polishing them, like some people love to do either.

On my way back from Cheddar last weekend and followed the guys from Danbury down the M5, there was some VW thing going on.

They were both 58 reg's. £30k though is a touch steep. Cheek out the cost of options!

They still made Bay Buses in SA for years after they were obsolete everywhere else...

Are Beetles obsolete everywhere now (SA, Mexico & Brazil)?

It was the T25 model (aka square van) they made in s.africa for years.

told you I was sad

beetle is out of production now.

you can buy a new mark one golf though !

not uncommon- when manufacturers change models-the third world gets the car presses etc-

I went to china a while back- full of early 80's vw passats and mid 90's citroen zx's. but brand new.

Yes, the last Beetle was built in Brazil in 2006. They did make Bay Type 2s in South Africa for a long time: I saw a new one not that many years ago. I think that they were built to a higher standard than the water cooled Bays still being built in Brazil too.....

It's odd.The more technologically advanced we have got the more I hate cars and I'm a caraholic.Just not excited over a Yaris with an mp3 player or bmw with i drive.

So,nice to see the old stuff like that golf!

There was a 1963 split windscreen (LHD) in white outside KFC in Penzance a few weeks ago, absolutely gorgeous. Had a load of people stood round it which I think the guy who owned it was a little annoyed about as he was trying to eat his KFC.

wouldnt have one myself, didnt matter if it was mint as the thing foremost in my mind with that type of van is that any crumple zone is onfact you legs!

I think that you have missed the point there chap. The Mk1 Golf still being manufactured in SA is a four door model.

Thats a test of the facility, not the Bus. The van was heavily laden and its going very quickly: note that there arent any dummies and the chequer markings are missing.....

A little searching will find proper crash tests.

I hope the new vw camper vans stand up better to a crash than the old ones, here in cornwall they are the surfers preferred choice of transport and the ones I have seen crashed have crumpled up like a cardboard box
