SWAP 02 VW Bora TDi For 2000 A3 1.8T Quattro?
I've been looking to sell my Bora PD130 TDI Sport for a month or so now, but only been getting silly offers. I know the market is crap, but with 63K on the clock I know it is worth more than £3.5K. Someone wants to swap me a 2000 (W) Audi A3 1.8T Quattro with 79K + full Audi history. It has been modded slightly with 18" BBS split rims, full stainless miltek, green cotton filter + upgraded boost pipes. Also REVO remap to 210bhp. I'm really tempted, as I don't need a diesel anymore (this car is for the Mrs), as I have a company car + fuel card for any long/family journeys. The Mrs can use the A3 to go shops/get out the house, and I can take it for a blast at weekends! Anyone got any thoughts? Or owned one? Parkers books the A3 at £3.5K standard, and my Bora at £4.3K. Bora does need cambelt + TAX/MOT in Jan 09, but he knows this.

Chris

the audi is hardly anything special though- 8 yr old tiny little car with a few worthless mods ? A£ has never looked good- maybe some of the new/expensive ones are ok- but not going back that far.
might be better off trying to sell the bora on the vw forums and have hard cash to play with ?

TBH your Bora is not worth as much as you think! Parkers guide is a good grand off the pace of what your car is worth! You should be looking at Glass's guide instead of Parkers.
You should be snatching their hands off if someone offers you anything over £3500. Trust me, the market is gonna get worse before it gets better!

Ok guys, maybe your right, I should just take £3.5K and run! I have considered letting it go for this, but tell myself with the condition its in, its criminal to sell it for that. Feel I should just keep hold of it, don't think I could get anything else as good as the Bora for £3.5K!
Thanks all,

Good point on remapping the Bora, I think Upsolute do a map for about £250. Google for Upsolute and "Simon Coe". Revo and Jabba Sport are also popular with the VAG diesel crowd.
Have you got a 5-speed or 6-speed box? A mapped 6-speeder can give a little more (as the box is stronger), but either way you are looking at an easy extra 30+bhp and around 280 ft-lb of torque.
I know two Passat owners that have had Upsolute and rate both the map and service very highly. They still get 45+ mpg as well as the extra grunt. Both have run 20,000 miles+ (one has done over 30K) since the map with no problems.

My cousin swapped his 03 plate Bora TDI for an 05 plate Vectra 1.9CDTI the one with leather and all the toys.(Still Cr#p)
He brought the Vectra to me on Tuesday to find out what the noise was, his dual mass flywheel has had it together with an engine mount.
To say he regrets getting shut of the Bora is an understatement it never missed a beat in the 18 months he had it and the guy who owns it admits its a great car.
Keep the car and modify it, now is not the time to sell cars that owe you nothing and are reliable.

Yes, I have sold perfectly good cars to buy something else and had disasters, sold a worthy but dull Mondeo 1.8 LX and bought a POS Fiat Coupe Turbo.
Like Zippy says, get it mapped or whatever and make the most of it, unless you are spending more money, you rarely get that much of an improvement.

Good points there. I have considered getting it mapped it the past, and maybe some nice 18's and lower har a little. I must admit that it has been a really good car for the past nearly 3 years. I have got extra cash I could throw in with a P/X to swap it, but the more and more I think about it, the Mrs only does 3000 ish miles a year. Is it worth spending money?? Maybe I should leave her with the Bora and buy something decent with my car allowance!!!

Don't go for the A3, it's old in the Hat compared to the Bora, get Custom Codes on it Drop it some 18"s, you will have all the benefits of a diesel saloon and more than likely be more fun to drive than the A3. Bora's do the Euro look very nicely.

If using a decent set of shocks and springs like Bilstein, then the ride can remain quite forgiving, If putting cheap copy wheels and budget tyres with a budget shock spring set then of course it will be totally different, after all the MK4 R32 used 225/40/18 and the ride is kool.

What makes you not like the set up? VW racing Springs and Bilstein Shocks coupled with decent Conti's. If you love comfort fair enough but you wouldn't buy a R32 for comfort. 18" with decent rubber and suspension wouldn't destroy the ride, Its when people cut corners and buy cheap Shocks and spring set up and something like Nankang tyres where they feel the car is uncomfortable/poor ride.
