Default £1000 car 4dr reliable

prefer something smaller but not sure what to get.

just for winter - so main car can be garaged till summer.

prefer petrol - and not going to do many miles

306 ? octavia ? would I get an old focus for £1k ?

cheers David

VW Golf/Polo or mostly any vw brand. But you could get a 2.0 classic sport n/a impreza.

I'm currently running a 306 xsi 2.016v -137bhp out of the box, which is also doubling up as a track car. Proving to be a very reliable car, nice inside and cheap on parts and still fun to drive. Just carried out a full oil, filter, break fluid, aifilter and rear breaks pads service all for about £40.

In fact I would go as far as to say its proving that much fun and reliable, that it in the current economic climate its going to be difficult to jump back into a 'decent' car in the spring.

I sold my Nissan Primera last year for £800 - it was a surprisingly good car, boringly reliable, dirt cheap to run and amazingly nimble for its size. I actually miss it occasionally.

306 Diesel Turbo. You'd get a focus for £1500 if you look on pistonheads.

Cheers for replies

1. sorry (only my opinion) but I absolutely loath all vauxhalls except Lotus Carlton.

2. Saab 9000 - good idea - was considering these since I've been a Saab owner for 10+ years and its my Saab Viggen I'm putting into storeage.

3. 306 - been looking at prices on these and being mid size if I can find a nice one I think that will be it (prefer petrol - dont do enough miles to warrant diesel - and prefer quieter car)

many thanks though - sometimes you miss the obvious..

cheers David

1998-2000 honda civic 5 door hatchback with the 1.5e vtec engine. I had the 3 door, and my friend had the 5 door hatchback. Both great cars for the money. You could abuse it for about 30000 miles without servicing, and it would still be the same as it was when you bought it...so if you look after one, it'll be fantastic.

Bulletproof!

Yep another vote for a Nissan Primera GT - loved the one I had - handled like a big Saxo VTS/106GTi and had all the bits on - electric sunroof, electric windows, electric mirrors, 6Disc CD changer, aircon, front strut brace...all as standard

I once had a Montego estate 2.0D between jobs, paid £595 for it and it was in a right state and I fooking hated it with a passion It never broke down on me though. Had to keep topping up the power steering and climb in through the back door

Nissan Maxima, Toyota Camry or Honda Legend V6's.

Understressed engines, won't have been used as taxis, reasonable mpg and high levels of comfort and reliability.

Insurance is the problem otherwise I would get a v6 etc.

but I two car - both have full NCB - and can only get a 50% starter discount for third car (cr4p I know - but insurance company must think I have three bodies - to drive them all at once)

plus I walk to work !!

cheers
