Mk3 escort very twitchy?
HI, Not sure if this is the best place to post this but here you go:
A mate of mine has a Mk3 escort cab with a problem that has him baffled. If he drives over a grisd or pothole at any speed the back end of the car twitches,(feels like it is wanting to go in a different direction to the rest of the car) Doesn't matter which wheel is in the pothole.
this feels really unsafe and as a result he's thinking of just scrapping it if he can't sort it.
Now he has replaced both shockers, Wheel bearings are ok and it has just gone through a mot so he presumes all bushes are ok.
Just wondering if anybody on here has any idea what it might be?????

Definately the rear inner bushes on the wishbones.
I remember having the same symptoms with an Escort RS Turbo many moons ago, a new set of rear bushes cured it. IIRC, bushes were around £25.00 from my local Ford stealer.
They can be fitted fairly easily at home, just remember to use plenty of WD-40 on those nuts and if the car has ABS, mark the position of the adjustable arms on the load sensors that bolt to the wishbone.

Because the car passed a MOT, doesn't mean the bushes are OK, it just means they are in one piece (not split or falling apart) and no obvious free-play when levered or moved by hand. Which means when under the loads of being driven, they can still be as sloppy as hell.
Remember MOT = bare minimum safety standards, and very open to human error in terms of discretion.
