Question Opinions on 206 HDi GTI Please

Thinking about going to have a look at one for sale tomorrow. Just as a second car run around. Stats look good.

110BHP, 180 lbs/ft Torque
0-60 - 9.8 secs
MPG
Urban - 47.1
Extra Urban - 68.9
Combined - 58.9

Anyone ever owned/driven one? What they like to drive? own? real fuel consumption?

Aren't 206's supposed to have a very uncomfortable driving position?

All comments welcome.

Fabia vRS. Better car all round. Might loose a small bit on economy, but on every other measure the Fabia is better. I am biased as I owned one, sold it to my best mate, he's still averaging 50+mpg in it, though it is now running 163bhp & 318lbs ft. Standard it was 144bhp with 255lbs ft. If you get the Fabia you must get the Jabba Sport rear anti roll bar fitted, it transforms the car.

With regard to the 206, yes I found the driving position uncomfortable, you sit on the angle.

Had a spin in one.

There is just something about the whole car that is not nice.Driving position, fitments, body shape.Sorry, wasn't impressed

Not being biased because we had one but Fabia was great.

(wish they would stop putting GTI on these sort of cars too!!)

Fabia's are still abit too pricey. Like I say, It's just a run around. Max budget £5k.

206 is up for £4950 - Hoping to get it for as close to £4k as possible. Cheapest Fabia vRS I've seen, is £6795.

My sis has the lower powered one now.She keeps chuntering about how she preferred the oomph of the one she had before.

If its a runabout,fine

Edit...think she has 110 now so not sure what her previous 206 would have been130bhp?

Actually I'n not even sure if its a 207 she has now?!

Never liked the way 206s (nor 207s) drive. Nor the gearshift on more "worn" examples ( i.e most ), the sporty variants don't seem to be any better either..

Always preffered the 307 as a better driver's alternative

Used to own a 206 1.6 XS, and although not the diesel model you are on about, I too found the driving position awkward. The most irretating problem I found was how close to gehter the pedals were. In some cases I was pressing both the Brake and accelerator sometimes. One problem I did have (Maybe because it was a new model at the time) was for some reason I managed to damage the drive shaft basically the next owner who bought the car (After trading it in for a Scoobie 2000) said that the thing had eventually snapped.

Best thing about them is the service intervals. I.e longer than normal.

Too true.....The 206 2.0Hdi was the first and last french car I shall ever buy. What a croc of sh*t. The engine is sweet, but that is as far as it goes. Electrics, sensors, electrics, sensors nothing but trouble.

PS - There has been a Bora PD130 TDi in between, now I'm lookin for a Furby VRS for her.

shame you're not over Herefordshire way really. My mate has a MINT 3dr 307 HDI (turbo) in blue for sale for £4k. One lady owner too. Low miles iirc.

He took me out in it - plenty of poke and sporty handling (for a Peugeot!)

My other friend had a 206 gti. He loved it. I thought it was sh1te. Never took to it. Echo what others have said above.

Having driven the 307, it really is NOT a drivers car, so that must mean the 206/7 must really be bad to be worse than the 307!!!

Anyway, Peugeot stopped making drivers cars when the 306/106 ceased production.

Went to see it at on Saturday. Looked in really good condition. Couldn't fault it for its condition.

However.
Pedals were so close together it was quite uncomfortable. Can't remember my 106 GTI's being that close. Still, you could get used to it.

Also the trip computer was saying 33mpg........ not the 50mpg I was expecting to see. Maybe once warm and a long drive would get that figure.

I did agree a price, but after a night sleep changed my mind. Realistically, I should get an estate car......... for the dog.

Might have to up my budget too. Up from £5k to £7k. Thinking Mondeo TDI Estate (130bhp)

don't know about the HDI but my parents have owned a 206 cc 2.0 16v for a few years and I've driven it on many occasions.

My observations are:
Interior trim feels very cheap and plastic.
The gear change feels like stirring porridge
The handling and steering is sharp and fairly sporty though.
Servicing hasn't been very expensive.
reliability wise, only a duff sensor has affected it, otherwise it's been faultless.

I would suggest that you avoid it with a bargepole, horrible cheap and nasty cars with poor build quality and reliance issues. Try the new small Golf, cant recall the marque but gets a high mpg.
