Default reccomend me a car - <£1000

Looking to sell my S2000 in 'high' season and get a runabout for 6 months. Plan to buy a new S2000 in the winter when prices are lower and supercharge it up to 330bhp!

Runabout must cost less than £1K, be cheap to insure and run. Must not depricate very much at all.

Considered -

Ford Fiesta 1.8 XR2i 16v (1993ish)
Ford Fiesta 1.6 Si 16v (1996ish)
Ford Escort Diesel 1.8TD (1998ish)

Is there anything else that ticks the boxes?

Corsa 1.5 td 93-98, low tax 60+mpg £500 will run on svo (veg oil) with no mods (Isuzi engine)

Pug 306 D Turbo 50 mpg, more manly looking, will run on svo up to hdi T plate. Less than £1k.

GF had a 306 diesel and had loads of problems. Would still consider it though.

RE veg oil - where do you get it form? A local chippy and filter it? Do the diesel filters need changing more regularly? Cheers!

Edit - insurance - Corsa 1.5D £15 a month. 306 TD £18 a month!!! Makes a change from my £66 for my S2000!

Seat Cordoba 1.6 - i had one of these, cheap as hell to run, own and maintain.
And tuning is a doddle as its mostly VW

I had a TD Escort too,1996, another cheap car to run, in 12 months it cost me a set of discs, pads, 26 quid for the lot!

Get it straight off the shelf. Better buying at places like Bookers, Aldi, LIDL or Costco. Looked at veg oil prices in Sainsbury's yesterday and was nearly the same price as diesel.

Some older diesels will run on it just tipping it into the tank like the 2 I've mentioned, you may have to thin with a small amount of petrol. Others require a secondary tank with oil heaters, most new diesels won't be able to run on it.

Change the fuel filter as the svo clears the lines of a lot of crap then stick to normal servicing.

Used chip oil (wvo) can be filtered and used, this is what bio diesel is.

The gov't changed the law last year about using svo, previously outlawed, you're now legally allowed up to 2,500 litres of personal use pa duty free. In reality there's no way for them to know how much you're actually using.

If ya can live with the looks a nissan micra lol i bought one for £600 3yr ago its got 125,000mile on it and dont use a drop of water/oil and better still no oil leaks at all-its just been one of them cars thats really amazes me ive put a battery/clutch and a driveshaft on it whilst ive had it so probably spent a couple of hundred quid (were a recon driveshaft)thats been it,just depends on what ya want from it-i just wanted something to go to work in that were cheap to run an kept miles off the scooby.

Its only a 1.0 16v but drives like a 1300 8v as a result so can just about live with it though personally if i had another would go for the 1300 16v still cheap insurance/fuel-reckon i probably get about 45mpg oh yer an timing chain so no worries over the belt.

If i ever had to recommend a sml runabout to anyone micra`s would definately be top of the list-can ya imagine what a k-reg fiesta would be like at 125,000 mile-this virtually drives like new still.

Reckon when i sell it it will still fetch 3-£400 can live we them sorta costs/depreciation in fact if it dont want much this mot may keep it another year yet (its sailed straight through 2 others)

Is this REALLY worth the hassle? Will you actually save all that much when you consider advertising costs, etc, etc. I find selling cars a real heartache and would never sell one I know a trust just to buy another of the same car 6 months later and face all the potential buying pitfalls. The only reason I could imagine you are doing this is to sell up a 2006-8 car to buy an older one as, last time I checked, supercharging post-05's was more hassle.

I've got an MY00 at the minute. Should have said newer, not new! I'm after an 04-05 facelift model as I reckon they look much better. Less to go wrong on a newer car, calipers, bushes, etc...

Depends on your insurer TBH mate. Some don't charge. Anyway, I'll only have the car for 6 months so it's cheaper to pay 6 monthly installments than the whole premium!

2.5 Vectra would be heavy on fuel so that's a no-no. Did look at the golfs but thought one of my other choices would be cheaper to run. Thanks for the ideas though

I'm not too sure I could live with the looks! Although the 1.3 Si is a little better in that department!

Some great information there, thank you! This looks appealing to me. I've tried to search CostCo and Tesco for prices of big drums but can't find anything! Does anybody know how much the large drums sell for and how many litres they are? Also, usin WVO, can I just literally put it through a fine filter, or is there more to it than that?

It's filtered then mixed with a thinner. If you can't get intoa cash and carry best to try Aldi or Lidl. There's bound to be a forum or two with better information.

Thanks. Did do a google and it seems that you can mix it with 5-10% white spirits. I'll have to work it all out to see if it's still worth it, hopefully will be!

Theres a lot of well-meant nonsense posted here, aout vegetable oil and biodiesel. SVO costs so much to buy off the shelf now, that it simply isnt worth the trouble and filtered chip shop waste oil is completely useless! Biodiesel is RME (rapeseed methyl ester), which is SVO which has been processed to remove the glycerin. This invloves methanol, caustic soda and a sh*t-load of heat, not to mention messing about.....

Mate, i bought a 1995 Toyota Carina E petrol six months ago for £450 with 5 months test and tax at the time....put it through the MOT last month and it only cost me...wait for it....£35 in parts/labour (two rear bushings, handbrake tightened and headlights aligned)

Car is brilliant, it just drives and drives and never needs anything apart from petrol, and as its the 16v twin cam engine it goes ok as well. Its easy enough on fuel as well!!

I tear around in the toyota all week and then come Friday evening i take the RB5 out of the garage all clean and shiney for the weekend
At £450 the car is absolute buttons and if anything happens to it i have no big loss of thousands of pounds, so i would recommend something like this for you!!

As also said above the Primera GT is a good option also, quick and reliable, you cant beat the jap-scrap

Forget the old Fords...TWOCcers dream cars. Bubble shape Micra...no cambelt to change or an Almera if you need 5 seats. 100% reliable if you change the oil every now and then. No brainer once you've got used to the unassuming looks. Had one which at 8 yrs old still had freezing cold aircon which had never been touched. All for £1k. Sold it 15 months and 20k later for £1100. Total cost £30 for 2 oil changes
