I'm thinking of buying a pick up, new or nearly new.
Anybody got any experience of them. Good and Bad points etc etc.

These are what I am looking at currently or are there others I should consider.

Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200.

Hi there, Had a L200 animal (new shape) for a while, biggest let down I've ever had with a vehicle!!!!!!!!
Got it to just over a year old, and in that time it broke down on several occasions, stranded me twice overheating, ecu went to sleep a couple of times, once in the fast lane of the motorway (that was exciting!!!) my son was also stranded on the hard shoulder of the M6 overheating (aparently the radiator caps dont fit properly, but try to get a dealer to admit this!!!). Looked great, Leather seats were fantastic, smartnav was quite good, front wheel arches peeled off at speed, Traction control was a pain in the ***, OFF isn't really OFF, would switch itself back on right in the middle of a bend so abruptly nearly caused an accident. Got the impression that Nissan were selling loads of Navara's and mitsubishi rushed the new L200 out to compete. If I was looking now, would think verrrry seriously about the Toyota with the 3.0 engine, the smaller engine is seriously slowwww. Liked the Navara, but just think the Toyota is better built.

I've known 3 people with Navara'a and they have been nothing but trouble, all 3 of them wished they's bought a Hilux.

Another friend has an 05 L200 Warrior and likes it, not the fastest orr road 4x4 on the road but a sterdy work tool.

What about the isuzu rodeo,dorset coastguards chose them above the navara,plus you can ppp it!

The turning circle and the service cost on the misti are cr ap. Ive used, driven, and worked on both that and the nissan and it is by far the better truck.

Been and had a quick look today and its difficult to choose.

The Navara is a bit bigger, more power and spec than the others and seems to get better reviews generally.

I used to have a Mitsubishi Pajero and it was amazing off road and bullet proof.

Clarkson couldn't destroy the Hilux (and f4ck me he tried). He also used one to get to the North Pole.

Isuzu Rodeo? Not thought about them.

Hilux any day of the week. Go for the 3l D4D engine though.

we have no end of trouble with the navara cranks breaking up up mate, even after fitting brand new nissan cranks

Thanks. Just reading some stuff on a Navara forum about this on the >55 D22 engines.

It seems like the post 55 D40 engines are ok...... I think.

The latest news from Toyota, is a tuned version of the Hilux will be out soon in the near future.The power it's Producing is 190+ bhp and increased torque too.I will find a 4x4 magazine and tell you the price.Toyota won't release price until near sale date.

good question , i am also thinking of a pick up . will be taking the scoob off the road next year and need something to tow it with , thought about shoguns etc etc but i don't fancy the £450 road tax , that's why i'm taking the scoob off the road, 3rd march 2001 ,

mate of mine has an 03 navara , only done 16k and has had no problem at all . i've got me eye on an isuzu rodeo at the moment though , i'm after an automatic and they seem the best value for autos . . although i'd also like something with cruise control as well . fussy git ain't i lol .

the isuzu is an 04 with 40k on it, tow bar , 3.0 TD auto , truckman top etc , for 6995+VAT . i'm registered so would claim the vat back .

If you have a Scoob at the minute to p/x then you'll get more for it if you chop it in with an Isuzu dealer. I got £2000 more for my Spec B Legacy than I was offered by Nissan.

I liked the spec and interior of the Nissan, but it was around £2k more than the competition (Aventura spec).

I chose the new Isuzu Max LE and got it for £19,000 +vat.

It's coming up for a year old, zero issues, 29mpg and always gets comments from people about how nice it looks.

I don't miss any of my Subaru's at all, but that's because a pick-up is far more practicle for my job and family life.

I use a 57 plate Ford Ranger Thunder (super cab)for work, bearing in mind I've had it for 6 months and only done 5000 miles it's been faultless. It's got the 2.5 TDCi engine and returns 28-30 MPG. The only thing that I don't like is the turning circle is naff, but when you consider it's a big vehicle, it's not surprising really.

I used to drive a Toyota Hilux in my old job and in my honest opinion, the Ranger is far better/nicer to drive.

Been and had a quick look through the railings at Triangle Chesterfield (closed today) at one of these. Lots of Subaru dealers seem to do Isuzu as well.

Not chopping my scoob in so do you reckon they would do much for a straight cash buy?

Ive read some horror stories about the Navara, which I was leaning towards, seems to be loads of blown engines etc even the latest model £9k replacement.

I like the look of the Isuzu so going to have a proper look this week. I should have a closer look at the others before I decide.

I think because the Navara is the biggest selling pick-up then you are bound to read more horror stories.

I've had some of the worst possible customer service from Subaru dealers, but there are plenty of people on here that still swear by the brand.

We've used a Navara here for 2 years now, and in that time its been through about 3 clutches. It will more than likely be replaced by a Hilux at the end of summer

The L200's drive alot better than the Navara. Take both out for a test drive, you'll know what I'm talking about instantly.

I brought one a couple of years ago, it has had some problems, but they've always been put right without to much inconvienence.


If I was you, I'd buy the one I liked.

My Dad has a Hilux 3.0D Invincable.

We drove that, the Navara and the L200.

A couple fo his Friends have Navara's and between them in the last 2 months I think they have had 3 clutches and 2 gearboxes.

The Hilux was cheaper than the other two, better spec, and he is averaging 32MPG driving it around the lanes in Devon!!!!

It is great on long journeys and the Torque is constant from 1500rpm through to 4K rpm so it will pull like a train at any speed and in any gear!!!!

The only downside I have found driving it is that you have to be careful with the right foot in wet or damp conditions but that may be the same as any other truck.

Also just to add it is 10 months old and done 12K trouble free miles!!!!

And servicing was cheap too!!!
