New Audi RS6
Don't suppose anyone has driven one as yet?
Also I see it has a tiptronic rather than DSG, anyone comment on the Audi tip system compared to say BMWs SMG?
Will change the M5 next year and as the GTR can't accomodate my family the RS6 is next in line. It'll have to be one hell of a car to prise me out of the M5

Clearly it's going to be impressive with 580bhp ( ) and 4wd! 0-124mph comes up in 14.9 seconds!
Being out-accelerated on a bypass by an old-shape RS6 whilst in a friends WRX is still the most convincing acceleration I've ever seen on the road, so this new one will be crazy!

It seems to be getting decent reviews - from what I've read it should be a big improvement on the old car.
I don't think I could stomach the depreciation on - even a used - one though. The last RS6 was bad enough, this one will probably be even worse.

Can there be a more pointless car than this one? Who the hell needs a 2 tonne, 580bhp estate car? This is power for power's sake and the sooner Audi start making a car with less power and less weight than the previous model the better it will be for everybody.

Have to agree there... people seem to be obsessed with big number nowadays......

I don't even like the looks of the new one.
My old one in Misano Red turned heads like no other car I've owned, in fact a grey one passed me yesterday going the opposite way and it even turned my head.
The new one is, well - meh.

I'm not after power for powers sake if thats what some people are implying?
If it was I'd just buy an AMG. Thats why I wanted to know if anyone may have had a preview drive to see if it can outdo what I feel is the bench mark of excellence for super saloons, and thats the E60 M5, luckily I already have one of those

Did you try an Alpina B5 before you procured the M5? I find that In contrast to the M5 it has a smooth autobox, more torque than the M5 which is accessible by the slightest prod of the loud pedal and gets mid 20's mpg. The M5's woefully small fuel tank only adds to the frustration. Unless your at warp speed it just feels too lethargic - definitely needs more torque.
Benchmark of excellence for super saloons? I very much doubt that.

RS6 Avant vs. M5 Touring - FanHost Forums
Audi RS6 Avant
V10 bi-turbo
4,991 ccm
580 PS at 6,250-6,700 rpm
650 NM at 1,500-6,250 rpm
AWD
6-speed automatic
2,025 kg
286 bhp/ton
0-100 km/h in 4.6 secs.
Vmax limited to 250 km/h (280 km/h optional)
MSRP: 106,900 EUR
vs.
BMW M5 Touring
V10
4,999 ccm
507 PS at 7,750 rpm
520 NM at 6,100 rpm
RWD
7-speed sequential
1,880 kg
270 bhp/ton
0-100 km/h in 4.8 secs.
Vmax limited to 250 km/h (305 km/h optional)
MSRP: 95,000 EUR
My verdict:
The BMW M5 Touring loses against the Audi RS6 Avant because of its dated and inconvenient gear box, with the manula transmission of the US version or a DSG it would much closer to the RS6 which handles much better. It is more comfortable to drive also due to the better transmisson and all the power and torque of the V10 bi-turbo engine being available at low rpm. The M5 feels more dynamic, makes more fun as the engine always has to be revved up to the max.
The RS6 is the better dialy driver despite the disgusting AT.

580bhp sounds crazy until you realise it weighs over 2 tonnes(!). Power to weight isnt THAT great afterall. 287bhp /tonne. With a bit of fettling on many a turbo car, that's achievable. But above 80mph or so I suspect it's lunacy. A remap would certainly scare. Gluttonous fat car though but would obviously accept one as a gift...

Greetings Mr Singh,
Did you try an Alpina B5 before you procured the M5? I find that In contrast to the M5 it has a smooth autobox, more torque than the M5 which is accessible by the slightest prod of the loud pedal and gets mid 20's mpg. The M5's woefully small fuel tank only adds to the frustration. Unless your at warp speed it just feels too lethargic - definitely needs more torque.
Benchmark of excellence for super saloons? I very much doubt that.
Cyril.

If you think I'm going to be tempted by your trolling you are mistaken. Good try.

Its annoying when people go on about the cumbersome auto mode. It is cumbersome, but then its not meant to be driven in auto, if thats what someone wants they should buy an AMG.
The SMG is far from perfect (especially when parking etc) but for the enthusiastic driver will knock the spots off any convential auto/tiptronic (newer DSGs excepted of course)
Don't also forget that the M5 is now 4+ years old and we are comparing this to a RS6 that hasn't even been released yet. I think the new M5 will set the bench mark again.

Why do you want 10 different gearbox settings, 10 different suspension settings? Traction control settings etc?
For me the V8 powered M5 is far more desirable. Get in, and everything is set-up perfectly. Drive off and have fun.
That's why I like fast Audi's. Old mans RS4 was just the same. Get in, and everything is set-up. It had a Sport button, but that's it.
His R8 is just the same.

It was a genuine question that I asked - I am genuinely interested as to why you chose the M5. You seem to have mistaken my intentions, for that I apologise.
I have to agree with Mr Lover. The E39 M5 was a a fantastic tool.
Cyril.
