I've been looking into this recently myself, was seriously considering buying one because the prices have FINALLY started dropping a little, now that the new GT-R has broken cover. R34 values were very strong (and still aren't exactly cheap in fact).
in terms of power, it is difficult to compare, because the R34 (and skylines in general) were very easy to mod and get big power from, so there are not very many pristine standard examples out there. From what I understand however, a stock R34 should outperform the equivalent standard STI from the same year, although probably would have its work cut out against the newer STIs (say 2005 onwards) around a track. R34 owners really love them, but they acknowledge that they are expensive to run (very low 20s mpg), insure and maintain. Plus if you need an engine rebuild you are looking at nearly 10K by all accounts. The only other bad point for me was the sheer dimensions of the car --- having now examined a few in the flesh you realise that they are actually VERY long!
having said that though, I still rate the R34 as one of the best ever Japcars, and although many people differ in their opinion to me, I also think it is one of the best looking
good luck in your potential purchase
