You will struggle to find a mk4 gti for 1200 quid. If you are young and its your first car with zero no claims bonus add another 2k to insure it
I bought a brand spanking mk4 gti in 2000 and it was well built, reliable but no tarmac scorcher.

The MK2 is a legendary hot hatch.

The MK4 shouldn't even wear the GTi badge.

That's a very nice looking 16V, I much prefer the small bumper version, could almost be a CL. Nice to see one without the anti-theft door handle adaptors as well. Guess robbing MK2's isn't as popular as it once was, scumbags obviously have poor taste.

Get a mk2, for about £800 you should get a decent 8v put the rest to insurance and running... or maybe that should be the other way around if its your first car!! Ive just broken one (get more for it that way) after running one again after a 10 year break. It was great. Parts are very cheap and there is less to wrong than a mk4. Just get one with good original bodywork. Mechanically they could be looked after by a blind man! Check out the late Driver versions (J plate) as they are 1.8, not too slow, will have been thrashed less and the insurance should be better.

I don't think you'd get a Mk4 for £1200

And if you did, it'd be a POS at that price.

I have had a few Mk 2 GTi's and as stated they are pretty good cars. The PB engine is legendary in it's longevity and is simple to work on. The later cars, F onwards have the better injection set up (Digifant), late G onwards have the big bumpers and better interiors, make sure they have the heater hoses uprated.

CV Boots need checking and bearing wear on the rear hubs. MFA needs to work but these can be fixed. Check all the usual stuff like the coolant, oil and smoking engines.

The Driver is a real gem and can be made to "looklike" a GTi for pennies.

German, Swedish and French Car parts or Eurocarparts are very good for bits.

If you want to see some real mint stuff look here.

VolksWizard - VW Audi specialist near J3 M42

Just have a concern that "you know you hit it!" If thats the case buy a Saxo with wings on

Not many colour concepts around at that money, not in my area anyway, if you see one in scotland Ciaran let me know as im looking at a runabout and would love a mk3 colour concept!

A dealer local to me has one for 1200 but its got 215k showing with a replacement 2nd hand engine at some undetermined time fitted. Still thinking about it though!

Mk3 8v will be a lot slower than a mk2 16v.

Have you checked insurance yet? Might be pretty stupid costs even for a relatively slow car like a gti.

Cheers Nacro, it's also a rare colour apparently.. Only 64K miles on the clock.

I agree, definitely take a look at the mk3's. Built like tanks (engine wise)
Great looking, better than the 2 and 4. Personally a fan of 1s and 3s. The even ones just dont do it for me......

I used to own this one

Sold it when I went working overseas, regretted the decision almost immediately

So when I saw a fellow SNer was selling this one

I made sure he didn't have time to change his mind

Had one, not that fast, drink fuel, to nose heavy for decent handling even with the Koni suspension I fitted to mine.

Just bought a mint MK2 16V 3dr in tornado red with only 86000mls for £1800 love it to bits.
