My T5 is standard, anybody got any experience with regards to tuning be it chips, exhausts etc. I should imagine that the T5 engine could produce ultimately more power than a Scoob engine given its higher capacity and extra cylinder, and then smoke the lot away thru the front wheels !

I would expect it to be possible for 400 BHP

Check www.tme.se and the English Q&A on the site -- they're reckoned to be the best tuner for Volvos. They say that with the standard turbocharger, you can get max. 300 bhp, as it's only a small unit designed for mid-range rather than top-end power. But they reckon 280bhp and 300+ foot-pounds over a wide spread is easy with an ECU & zorst.

They're a bit easier to tweak than Imprezas because they've a bigger (front mounted) intercooler (more safety margin) and you can actually get at the major components without skinning knuckles etc ..... ;-)

Edited to say that TME have a UK distributor in Yorkshire. The other site to check is www.kalmar-union.com, they're based in London and do a good amount of off-the-shelf stuff, inc. tailored bleed valves, exhausts, ECU upgrades, dump valves etc

If you've got deep pockets, try a company called Unitek in Lulea, Northern Sweden ( http://home.bip.net/unitek/ , http://www.turbobricks.org/parts.html ). The owner is called Mike Aaro, and he's extremely knowledgeable (as witnessed by some of his posts on the Turbobricks mailing list).

As far as I have heard yes they are standard within GMP, dont know about anyone else though, they always have the hardest factory suspension set up though. They may seem quicker as they are trained drivers as opposed to 14 year old ******* in a stolen Metro.

Generally all police vehicles are built to standard spec on the engines. The only car I know positively that had been uprated was a Rover 800 Vitesse with a 240bhp 2.0 turbo.

Otherwise the police tend to concentrate on suspension and braking upgrades, as they are the things that take the hammering.

Case in point being the Escort Cosworth that Ford SVE developed for Humberside Police. Rally spec suspension, wheels, tyres with uprated brakes, just incase the ******* they were following decided to try going cross country to evade capture. I'm sad to say that car had a 100% capture rate, just that it was often in the workshop getting repairs done (usually engine related), that they became frustrated with it, and bought scoobies instead.

I have just been on the TME website, and thus it only took me 6 years to find out that the turbo on my old 850 T5 is virtually the same as on a ... stock Impreza

Thanks for that link BTW.

As for the original question ... I have a "detuned" T5 since 2 months The car overboosted a bit in 4th (fuel cut stylee), so I asked the Volvo dealer to have a look. After 3 days, a big bill, and lots of confusion ("it's the electronic turbo, Sir" ), the overboost was "cured". That is, there is hardly any boost left at all.

If you know the clumsy boost gauge on the T5 ... it used to go to the end of the solid white marking, now it goes about 3 mm into that same marking, probably corresponding with something like 5 psi (bum dyno) Takes about 10 seconds now to go from 70 mph to 80 mph

Is there a "VolvyNet" somewhere where I could ask how the hell I can get it back to acceptable performance levels ?

now this could be complete **** but...

a chap in the office's mate has just bought a T5, he knows a chap who used to work at BBR in brackley. the bbr geezer has told him that for the price of a 6mm plastic T-piece he can liberate 25bhp from the standard engine, something to do with the turbo vacuum piping?. also if he fits a panel filter he can expect 260BHP.

does this sound reasonable to you guys? or am i being given duff info?

Known as a bleed valve, can be a way of melting your engine, done properly though, cheap power

I used to have a Vauxhall Cavalier 4x4 turbo ex-police car.

was told it was standard 204bhp - but both myself and a
Vauxhall mechanic knew it was more.

never found out what they did to it , neither did the mechanic
but it was v.v quick

What's the thinking on ex-police cars? I'm tempted to get an ex-police T5 as a cheap car.

Cheers

Lee.

Apparently a big luxuriant tache is worth 10% across the rev range, all traffic officers seems to have them, must work !

Ex Police cars have always been thrashed to within an inch of their lives (I should know I drive one!). They are driven 24/7 and do not have easy lives, however they are well serviced and problems are fixed as soon as they rear up. Traffic cars are far better driven and maintained than the panda cars which I couldnt possibly recommend to anyone, but you could in theory get a good deal on an old Traffic car.

Oh, and most Police cars ARE standard! But I believe that one force actually had a Prodrive prepared Scooby in active service!

Ahhh, are you sure it's not a **** star tache? Heard they were good for 50bhp

Seriously, TWR tuned a couple of 850R's to 320 bhp with the standard turbos I think... Surely if you want power in a volvo the one to have is the V70 T5R 4wd - at least then you'll have the traction to match the power

Yeah, 4wd would be the way to go, they are however rare and complex which is always a way to bin loads of money.

Danbo, which force do you work for ?

No more tache quips I promise !
