Question Time for a change....

...maybe.

My wife and I are expecting our first baby later this year, so I was thinking of changing from the Scoob, purely for financial reasons, cheaper insurance, running costs etc etc.

I have 3 cars in mind at the moment, and would appreciate any experiences/views on these cars. So in no particular order:

Ford Focus ST170

Skoda Octavia Vrs

Seat Leon Tdi (pref the 130 model)

Is there anything else I could consider?

Many thanks in advance guys n girls

Well, the ST170 won't be that much cheaper to run tbh.

The Skoda's a great car (IMHO), as is the Leon

You don't mention the option of a used car - if so, the A4 Avant TDi has to be in there, inc the A3 TDi (albeit smaller)

Vauxhall Astra? Dti?

Cheers Dan,

It would defo have to be a used car, as there is no way we could afford a new one.

Hadn't thought about an estate, just a hatch with a decent boot to accomodate the impending pushchair (god I hate those things) and all the other stuff that will have to be carted around. Not really a fan of the A3, they dont look right as a 5 door, and like you say, maybe a bit small.

Have owned a couple of vauxhalls in the past (Cav Sri & Vectra Sri) so that could be another option.

No probs

FWIW, my 1st Scoob was a wagon (for the very reason of the pram etc)

It was only when the kids got to mobile ages, I went to a saloon.

I've got got an S4 Avant, as despite the kids being totally mobile (4 & 7), the Labrador wasn't too keen on sitting in the back of the Scoob!!

The other options are a Mondeo ST24 Estate , BMW 3 Series Touring etc etc The other option is a Legacy Estate.....
I would seriously look at an estate, as you'd be surprised how much stuff you need to transport with a baby

Hope this helps

We considered a Focus and Leon but settled on an Octavia when our little'un was due. You'll struggle with anything other than a buggy in either of the hatchbacks if you need to carry anything else as well. The Octy boot is cavernous, accommodating our M&P MPX pram, the missus's hairdressing equipment, the baby bag and still leaving room for shopping at a pinch. We went for the 2 litre TDi PD140 Ambiente model and it returns 40+mpg 'round town, near 60 on a run, costs £115 to tax and pennies to insure. Handling is barge-like but a few quid on some springs, ARB's and better wheels/tyres would sort that, and the PD140 lump is quite sprightly given the weight of the car. If I sorted the handling then I might be tempted to remap for IRO 190bhp, but we decided to keep all the cash reserved for moving up to a vRS TDi PD170 estate, but they are holding their value like diamonds right now.

Well, we've gone and done it.

Original plan was to part ex the scooby, but then my bro in law stepped in and bought it.

So we picked this up this morning:

I'm sure we will have another Scooby in the future, but for now I'm very pleased.

I think that was the best choice given that you have a little un' on the way. The other two would not have been big enough. Not as if you're slumming it in the vRS though. Nice car.
