Default Mate at work has just bought an M3, but....

....... it has a private plate. Fair enough
Anyway - he showed me the document for the tracker fitted to the vehicle and that showed a previous number for the car which showed it up as a Y plate. He told me that the car was a 2005 so i questioned why the car had previously had a Y plate on it - he said it was a private plate, but there was nothing private about it if you know what i mean? Anyway, i have put his present plate into the rac data check and that shows the car up as a 2001 .
Is there anything i can look at on his car which would prove what year it was?

BTW - he has thrown 28k at this car so i hope it is an 05

Take a bit of trim off and look for the date stamp on the back of it, circular, looks like a clock.

Bit basic but could give you an early indication. If its a 2005 car, it would'nt have parts that were made in 2001.

Perhaps he is lying to you in order to make you think he paid more for the car than he did? Maybe to impress you, can't imagine why though.

He just got it on saturday so will have to wait for the V5 to come through to check the details. According to him, he has paid for a data check on the car with the rac and he says it all checks out. Was hoping to find something visual on the car that either a 01 or an 05 does or doesn't have without letting the lad knowing what i'm doing - don't wanna come accross that i'm picking holes in his new toy and all that as he thinks i'm jealous of his purchase

This is very possible as he likes everyone to know how much money he has

My 2005 STI is on a `S` plate. Private? yes. Last 3 letters abreviate my name. So that is probably why the car was originally on a `Y` plate.

I now think he's trying to get some one upmanship over me as he knows i've just spent £26k on my new car, so what better than to spend £28k on an M3

Not bothered myself - If i wanted one upmanship, i wouldn't have bought a car which is significantly slower than his
I just don't like someone being economical with the truth to me

Point him at this thread.

If you read this Brun's work mate you're a shallow idiot who just got sussed

Plus you should have bought an E39 M5 with your cash. It's a much better car and a smarter choice.

If its 2001 then it shouldn't have the LED rear lights that the 2005 model does have.

LED rear lights. If it has them it's not a 2001.

EDIT: that#s what you get for waiting 5 minutes before hitting submit

IIIRC with Imprezas they put a date of manufacture on a tag on the front seat belts, maybe the same for a bmw.I'd go outside and look at my Impreza but I'm sick with flu right now.

Not sure on the M3's, but on the normal E46's the side repeaters/swage line are different, 2004 on is the facelift on those.

6 former keepers in six years, i bet it has been well loved and looked after.

I would imagine he knows how old it is, just wants to impress (in his sad little way) by how much he can lavish on his pride and joy.

they are only really subtle differenes on the body, the 2005 has the markers/indicators on the top corner of the front bumper, and the opening is a lot more square on the 2005 to the 2001 front bumper, there was some dramatic difference interior wise as well iirc.

I nearly bought an M3 instead of my STI 8 however opted out.

From my 2 months of viewing I can tell you now he's ripped off anyway.

Mint A1 condition under 50,000 miles 'Y' Reg 2001 Reg M3 should be £15k MAX
Mint A1 condition under 30,000 miles 2005 Reg M3 should be £25k MAX

I viewed dozens and these were private selling prices on mint conditioned M3's.

Some with stone chips etc, ranged from £13k on the 2001 regs, and on 2005's again £23k would fine you a very good example with a few minor issues to easily sort.

If he paid £28k for 05 reg he's gone beyond stealer prices and been ripped off. Log book paper work won't lie, if it's had 6 owners and is a 2005 reg i'd wonder why there is a new owner every 4 months :O

You can retrofit the LED's
True, but if the car in question doesn't have them he'll have a hard job convincing us he felt it was worth retrofitting the bulb efforts
