Smile Proper Old Skool - 635CSi

It's been a while since I've posted, but in the intervening time got myself a car I've always hankered after. This particular car was owned by a friend for many years and it was offered to me for an extremely good price.

It's a '89 E24 635CSi Highline with the Shadowline (i.e. dechromed) and LSD options ticked. The Highline was the top spec with literally everything fitted as standard for the period - including leather dashboard, door cards and a leather lined roof! This one was produced in Feb 1989 with production ending in April 1989, and it's since covered 143K. I've just fitted these wheels as the car came with the standard metric wheels; metric tyres are a fortune to replace, £250 per corner!

Nice colour and wheels, the colour makes it look classic, some of the other colours make them look old.

Excellent, before I bought the SVX I was looking for a Manual one, but then found out it is Group 20. Was looking for the slightly older more sharknosed one from around 1983 (before pedestrian safety was considered!!!).

I don't often comment, but what a top car... and the condition is amazing for the year. How much BHP?

Unfortunately it isn't a M635CSi, to get one of those in decent nick is ££££ indeed. It's fitted with the venerable BMW M30 3.5 straight six pushing out 210bhp.

Whereas my old Impreza (a MY98 Wagon) did about 23mpg on average, the computer in the BMW records about 18/19mpg on average over a combination of predominantly city driving with the occasional good run.

I've had some other dodgy old motors - an F-reg Merc 500SE and an K-reg Jag 4.0 Sovereign - however this BMW is absolutely head and shoulders above them.

Very very nice been a while since i've seen one as clean as that. I used to have one but the brakes were a bit scary though i fitted early 3.6 E34 M5 calipers discs and braided hoses the difference was truly awesome. You can also fit the 750i master cylinder which firms up the pedal a bit!!

Miles, you've been a "little" conservative with the BHP, I think it's actually 218 bhp to be exact Like Sonic, it's the only BMW I have always liked and would still actually consider. Would love the M version.

That one you've obtained looks well tidy and I like the wheels.

Lovely car.

Was into these about 12 years ago.

highline 635 was and remains georgeous esp in that colour.

Driving wise its I recall finding it a soft luxo gt. M635 on the other hand was a much sharper propostion. Would still love a mint M635

He's renovating a house and between that, his RR Sport and Defender 110 didn't have time for it - between October 2005 and October 2007 he barely did 1000 miles in it. Seeing as it was a bargain, he's got first refusal for a similarly "fire-sale" price if ever I sell it. Which is unlikely.

I'm lucky that I don't need a car for work, so that gave me the opportunity to buy and run something a bit crazy!

Make sure you use good quality anti freeze as the head is renowned for corroding around the water jackets

Thumbs up

That car looks great and what good condition!

Always had a soft spot for the 635csi, modern classic imho. I remember going into a BMW showroom on the outskirts of Bedford in 1981 when my my boss at the time had a 323i and seeing one for the first time, hge got me interested in BMW's as he was a big fan.

Have been thinking about getting one as a second car but nice un-chavved ones are few and far between.

Would love the m version but now serious money so we shall see

The old skool 3.0CSL would be high on my shopping list as well

That is pretty much the coolest car I have seen on SN for as long as I can remember
My uncle had a burgundy one in the 80's from brand new and I was only about 12 and was forever asking to sit in it! He had all kinds of sporty cars but the 635CSI and the 928S Porka are still two of my favourite cars ever built

Have to agree with Abdabz

I dont like nor have ever liked Beemers or Porkas, the only exceptions being the 635 and the 928S
