Default At last a car that ticks all the boxes

Alfa Romeo 8C | First Drives | Car Reviews | Auto Express

Ok, apart from practicality. Nice to see a car that looks gorgeous and handles (according to the review) well etc.

Do you know anyone that has grabbed one of the '40' allocated to the UK?

Dammit.

Looking atthe title I thought someone had come up with a RWD estate car - 350HP, weighs under a ton, delightful handling / brakes with air con, leccy windows and central locking.

but no....

Ha! I'd buy that if you chucked in leather seats.

Wish they'd made a previous shape (E39?) M5 estate, that would probably do.

3 year old mybe or you could have a new 8c drive it twice a month during the summer and in 10 years it be worth what you paid for it

However with my financial limitations a supercharged Rover ZT-T V8 is closest bar the weight

I'm just hoping one day Gordon Murray's new venture will produce a 1000kg family estate that is supercharger friendly

The ZT 260 is a great car, just not enough power cos it was the first of a range that never appaeared, as you say a Supercharger is the way forward, all well developed stuff from the states so should be reliable, takes it to nearly 400 bhp with tonnes of torque which will make even the heavy ZT fly, its already usefully quick but with 400 bhp you can really annoy M5's and the like.

My uncle hs a 260, he keeps toying with the Supercharger thing, a place called dreadnought in Scotland do the conversion for 6k, 10k gets you a run in ZT 260 with perhaps 40k on so 16k ish for a 400 bhp flying machine.

And to the Rover/MG haters, basically its a Mongrel car, most of the parts arent even Rover, its more Mustang, Tremec and Dana etc, there are even hints of BMW in there, the ZT was a product of the BMW tenureship of Rover and is way better than the 25 and 45.

I say, go for it, but I hope you dont do much milage, my uncle gets about 19/20 from his, best of about 26, saying that my 9-3 Aero is doing 23.6 at the mo so not that much different, certainly if you are used to a Scoob.

I think the weight is an unrealistic, if not impossible, target for a family estate. Family means people want comfort (space and gadgets) and safety, and it's those two that are responsible for the weights of those cars doubling in 20 years.

It's true that the spiral goes the other way though. Find a way of taking their weight off, and you don't need such a large engine to power it - and a smaller engine probably means another 100kg off...

If Subaru can make a 4WD one for under 1300kg nearly 15 years ago without the use of composites etc then I'm sure it can be done.

Think Scimitar / Elise hybrid

Also you're right, certain markets want the sat nav, electric everything, drinks coolers 20 airbags etc, but not the RA version!

Design the base sports estate and add weight and diesel engines as for the mainstream demand

I can dream on I suppose

Oh Jacko, I'm on it, just waiting for residuals to plummet further

Then only major issue with the 8C which is floating about some of the alfa boards is "would you take it to the alfa main dealer for servicing and repairs????" .... I doubt it

That is a lovely car. Seen it in Black, and it look awsome.

I think you have to know the right people to buy one of them. I think they'd sold all the cars before it even went public.

With the requirements for gadgets and safety, the 1 tonne performance estate car is history, I am sure it could be done, perhaps McLaren should be approached.
