540 advice.
Hoping someone can give me advice. A friend has got a 96 preg 540 v8 automatic. When driving normally car changes gear nicely. Whe putting your foot down it goes into what i can only describe as safe mode?? On the dash it reads "transmission fail safe mode, only 4th and 5th gears avaliable".
Any help/advice would be gratefuuly received.
Regards Dan

Have you tried BMW forums - there are quite a few.
Also do a search on this website for automatic transmission repairers.

A phone call to one or two should give you a clue to whjat's wrong.

It's getting to that age where the drawback of "filled for life" tranmissions are showing.
Several things that could be at fault;
Sensor/actuator/electronic fault - off to the gearbox specialist.
Low on fluid; they NEVER get checked, so a little drip from the output shaft over 10 years = not much fluid left. Don't even ask me how to top these things up as its a right pain in the **** to make sure one gets the right spec fluid (seesm BMW couldn't make up their mind themselves).
Or finally; Sludge/degraded fluid. Causing the first fault. Seeing it never gets changed it does degrade despite what they say. Bit late to change it now asyour clutching at straws at this stage.
As a note, I'd find someone experienced with BMWs to rule out the fluid level first. As there plenty of unscrupulous gearbox specialists that will happily recondition your gearbox for their usual full fee, yet the only fault is its low on fluid.
