BMW Z3 M Coupe.. any feedback???

friend of mine has the Zm roadster,he loves it.but its a 2nd car and weekend toy for him,far to impractable for everyday use.but then the coupe has a bit more room so i guess it would be a lot easier to live with.
he has never had any trouble with it and it goes really really well,i have driven it myself and it can be a bit of a handfull wet or dry but then it is bmw's little hooligan.

I seriously considered one of these but just decided they were a lot of money for an aging car. The research I did picked up on the VANOS system on the engine, which needs to be kept an eye on. I am now on my second Nissan 350Z which has cost more but the cars were / are a lot newer. I do love the M Coupe though, I bet they are quick!!

VANOS is BMWs equivalent of VTEC.
Honda's VTEC system is VERY reliable.
BMW's VANOS is NOT very reliable. It can break and costs mucho money to sort. OK, so you get a warranty but these don't come cheap. Basically, the car is known to be good, however you don't run these things on a tight budget.
I saw one go at Silverstone track day a few years ago, in the 1st session, poor blighter.

Vanos issue is jumped on alot by **** BMW owners. The problem is they can make a top-end noise. The other problem is the internet has spread the belief that this noise means its knakered. The point being because it makes a noise doesn't mean its broke, its a noise, not a failure.
Because of that many have been replaced that were not faulty. If you have heard a failed VANOS unit the noise is unmistakeable. But many have been replaced to cure what is a minor rattle. And some have failed yet made no noise whatsoever...Which means a minor noise means nothing about the forseeable condition of the Vanos unit...yet many owners needlessly replace them incurring stupid costs, adding to there noteriety when they boast about replacing them on the 'net when in reality its a non-issue.
For that, I'd take the publised (on the internet) Vanos issues with a sack of salt. - Like Subarus throw Bigs ends all the time and need cranking over with the crank sensor and spark plugs removed after every oil change.
Having been there when trying to convince a M3 owner (same engine) that there was absolutely nothing wrong with his Vanos, yet he still wanted to throw away his money to fix a non-existant problem, I can tell you its beggers belief.
Anyhoo Z3 M coupe, cracking motor...on the top of my short list once I get the Monoro out the way.
Just beware as with many M BMWs is they can get driven hard with little respect; Especially as they are more the weekend variety of car (i.e every weekend its thrashed to death which can be far worse than a car used for daily transport), so you have to take each car as it comes 'til you find the right one.
