Help with buying and restoring a 930 turbo
Hi all. I've put this post up on the 911uk forum but not had a reply yet so thought I'd try trusty old Scoobynet.
I have the opportunity to buy a 930 turbo and need to move relatively quickly if I am to secure this car. I'll be really grateful for any advice that people can offer.
So, it's a 930 turbo that's done 110000 miles and has been owned by the last (2nd) owner since 1984. The owner is a friend so I know the car pretty well. We are both under no illusion that the engine needs a certain amount of work. The car does not pull like it used to and sometimes when you apply the throttle the engine will emit quite a loud bang which sounds a bit like a backfire.
I took the car to a Porsche dealer today for a 111 point check. I must admit I wasn't very impressed with their check because I wanted to know about how the car was mechanically/engine wise. Their check was quite superficial identifying things like a missing aircon belt. When asked about the bang they said they would have to open up the engine to be able to diagnose it. I don't believe that for a second. Surely any Porsche mechanic worth his salt would be able to tell what the noise was? All I came away with was a superficial list of issues plus the fact that there are quite a few oil leaks. I also took it to the bodyshop that this Porsche dealer uses. Body wise the car had a bare metal respray back in 86 and in the last year or two some minor bubbling has appeared. Despite this, the car looks really fantastic. However, this guy identified some chassis repairs at the front of the car which had not been done very well. This was to fix corrosion and not crash damage. Eventually I got some figures out of these companies. The Porsche dealer quoted £15000 for an engine rebuild for starters. The bodyshop quoted £15000 to sort the body and chassis.
Now I believe these figures can be bettered by specialists but by how much? I was hoping I could spend nearer £15000 to get this car into a near concourse condition. In terms of companies to contact, the only one I know of is Autofarm but they are down south. I am in Cheshire. I'd really appreciate some views on prices, options, companies nearer/in Cheshire and your opinions. Thank you very much.

Try Stuttgart 9s - Talking Porsche.
Also there is a very well known Porsche tuner in Warrington which I once took my old TT to from Aberdeen. Seem to remember they were ninemeister or something like that.
Good luck. I used to own a 930 Turbo back in the early 80s. Amazing but sometimes scary at the time!

Get yourself a copy of 911 and Porsche World magazine mate, it has adverts in it for specialists around here, think there are a couple in Warrington and one in Hale (near Speke) for starters, Douglas Valley Breakers in Standish/Langtree is pretty good for parts - got a mint door for my 72 911E from them at a very competitve price Try calling into DP Motorsport in Warrington - Sankey Bridges - Dave Perry who owns it used to race Porsches and I have seen a fair few heavily modified turbo's (used to be a green one always in there - fella who owned it also had a genuine RS200 which he used to keep in the showroom at their old premises) he should be able to diagnose any probs for you

I could get the car for less than £15K. To make this viable, I would hope to buy the car and restore it to a very high standard (although not concourse) for £30K all in. If this is possible I would hope to have a car that’s been professionally restored and rebuilt for not much more than a top condition, well documented, low mileage example. However, in knowing exactly what work has gone into this car gives me more peace of mind than buying that example that, strictly, I don’t know anything about other than the owner’s word and a set of stamps and documents.
I also think that all this work will add to its current value and if I were to sell it (which is unlikely – this is a car to cherish forever!) I would not suffer any great loss especially if you compare spending 30K on any modern car.
That’s my thinking anyway. I could be completely wrong because my heart is clouding my head.

I used to look out for 'bargain' cars and spend hours tinkering with them to bring them up to nice but they never got to 'mint' as that takes serious money if it's had a hard life. - this was fun and good learning but I never got to enjoy them.
Depending on the cash of course, I am much more of the buy a damn good one and enjoy it from day 1. Undoubtedly add 50% to quotes of costs as there is ALWAYS hidden stuff lurking on a neglected car.
Just another opinion!
