On a long term ownership prospect and if its your sole car, as nice as the CSL is, its, very raw (good), but has no air con, no stereo, cardboard boot, no good in the wet with cup tyres, in essence a stripped out road legal track car, which you probably know yourself. If it were my money, I'd go for a 911 C2, otherwise it could be a TVR Tuscan or Evo FQ360 or the new Evo 10, or a skyline R34 GTR, or Lotus Exige or Lotus 111R, or 350Z, or Impreza RB320, or........so many choices!!!

I'd question a CSL being a stripped out road car.
It still has a good level of comfort, the front seats may be a bit uncomfortable for some, but it does have rear seats and rear seat access.
They do come with Climate control, this was a no cost option I believe. No good in the wet with the cup tyres, fine, but you can buy other tyres, or a spare set of rims.

Depends on what your after ?
Looks ?
Handling ?
Power ?
There are loads of factors to take into consideration.
At the moment i am in the market for a TVR 350C but this is going to be just a weekend car. Nothing more.

Most Porkers that age are not a patch on the CSL, the interior of the older 911's (up to 2004) are horid.
I would go CSL, almost gt3 performance and with ps2 road tyres you have nothing to worry about.

A question I have asked myself many times in the last few months, I have decided to add 10k and go for a 355
Porker with GT3 kit was my previous fav but have decided they are just not special enough.

996 GT3 mark 1 will hold its value because it’s becoming a classic. While a 996 C2/C4 w/GT3 kit has a linked depreciation rate with the standard C2/C4 but currently commands about a 2-3k premium.

Until you answer that question you will be jumping around from an s3 to 996.

CSL is certainly more stealth and does not shout out 'Come look at me in my flash car', however it is very competant, how competant over a standard m3 on the road? don't know, clearly it will have most things licked on track.
So, I have £30k, the only porkers I would consider is a 997 C4s or GT3 Mk2 and they are not available for £30k
You can get a TVR which won't work
A Nobble which looks awfull inside and has ford switchgear blah blah blah
So for sheer driver involvement and RWD, what is there in this price range which is special.

What a half assed reply.
Obviously you can't even do any decent research, and expect others to decide for you! 7K miles on a clutch! Do you do traffic lights grand prix at every opertunity?
"Running Costs" must be stupid - and you're thinking of a 993/6/7 porsche!!!
Go and drive a Mitsubishi, and then come back and complain about it's handling and active yaw!
As an evo driver (who only spent half of your 30k!), and the good fortune have driven the above - I wouldn't buy a 360 or any EVO for £30k, but I would not dismiss it as inferior - in terms of performance to anything you have mentioned.
Sorry for the rant, but they reallyare that special!

Been where you are for a few years mate.
30k ish
Ive had RS6, 54 plate M3, Evo's scoobs, M5,
ive also tried driving porkers, did not like atall, garbage.
I think for investment and thrills go for the CSL what a car.
The standard M3 is good but the CSL is a weapon.
I also nearly bought a brand new 360MR evo, but you will lose 15k in a year on it, mark my words.
Currently ive got a Evo 5 which im tuning, and ive got a Minted WR1
And my very nice company is wanting to lease me an M5 hehe.

I owned a nearly new 6 for 6 months and it had no end of problems, tyres last 4k miles, AYC pump went, then the diff went, this was all in a few motnhs of ownership, the car was £24k and 1 year old, oh! did I mention the **** poor build quality, the peeling laquer on the Brembo's, the bubbling alloys, all this was sorted under warranty, I hate to think how much it would have cost out of warranty, this was a one previous owner car with 10k miles on the clock.
My mates 7 had a clutch go after 5k, his brothers went after 7k so I DO know what I'm talking about and it's just not heresay.
You want to own an EVO and drive it hard, then you better have deep pockets.
CSL any day of the week, plus you have ot drive it, there is no denying it that 4wd cars (C4s including) flatter poor drivers.
As to your comment about go drive an evo, do your homework kid!

Well said cyberevo...
I've owned my CSL for over two years and having come from an EVO8 MR FQ320, understand and agree with your points.
By nature, I get itchy feet with regard to cars very quickly but I have yet to find a vehicle which could replace the CSL, ticking as it does, all the right boxes for me.
I recently test drove an MR FQ 360, still having a soft spot for EVO's. It is undoubtedly an accomplished car and in probably most circumstances would be quicker than my CSL but it's not a special car. Que the 'special' jokes...
For a while I even contemplated owning both. It would be a stretch but do-able and completely stupid...
For £30k or thereabouts, I'm fairly certain you won't be dissapointed with a CSL. If it's your 'thing' the car is also fairly modifiable. BMW's M cars are known for having substandard brakes and to this end I had a set of AP six pots fitted - what a difference... Of course there are after-market exhausts, maps and suspension options available as well. Look up Thorney Motorsport if you haven't already done so.
Finally - the noise the car makes - it's not the be all and end all - but I'll leave you with the words of the journalist who first tested the car for Top Gear Magazine -
"I won't beat around the bush here - the CSL is the best sounding road car I've ever driven. A sports exhausted Diablo SV is on a par, as is the old flat 12 Ferrari 512M and maybe the Pagani Zonda C12S. But that's about it. Not a 911 GT3, GT2 or GT1. Not a TVR nor a Vanquish nor a 355, 360, F50, Enzo, Murcielago, Gallardo or Koenigsegg..."
Ok, so maybe he get's a bit carried away there, but I think for £30K, with a Nordschliefe time (yes on Cups...) of 7:50, you get the point...
Steve.
