persoanlly would go for the anniversary Golf , although a 2002 model they can go for more than your 10k budget though. be prepared to travel at short notice. i rang about 2 sub 10k ones a couple of weeks ago, and they were both long gone. should get good residuals (there were only 900 anniversary diesels) watch out for defective paint/finish on the BBS Alloys, many of which have been replaced under warranty.

spoke to one guy last week, he had one up for 9k i think and accepted 8k. then his phone started ringing off the hook. worth trying ones advertised at 11k, to see if they will drop if you are a decent cash buyer.

Sporty? MkIV Golf? Not even remotely. I personally detest the handling of the MkIV chassis. I have a Bora with the GTI suspension and it's rubbish, the ride is abysmal, the body roll is worthy of a Citroen 2CV and there is no steering feel.

Get a 320D.

spot on unfortunately. The ride isnt sporty at all. Great for driving long distances though. Is there upgraded suspension on the anniversary model?

Fabia/Ibiza will be a good choice.
Failing that why not look at a leon or something like a Focus?

I guess it depends on what size of car you want

You would be suprised just how sharp an SRI set up on a Astra diesel is, whether it is dynamically any good I dont know but is far far better than I ever expected. For that money you'd get a recent one.

I'd get the Cupra TDI. Drove my g/f's brothers one and its an excellent little car. Remap will get you to 200bhp and it'll be a proper little hot-hatch but with excellent economy.
