I think the Mondeo is a better car. Just make sure you get the new TDCi engine and not the old TDDi which is pants. For £5k, it might be a higher mileage one, but the engine is a peach. Comes in 115 and 130bhp forms and well worth going for the 130.
Agree, though, that worth looking at Passats and Octavias too, but Fords are sooo cheap second hand.

mondeos are good for the money escpecially the 130bhp but you'll struggle to get a good one for 5k. Have a look at Skoda octavia or vw bora.
I have a nice 02 bora for sale!!

I had a Passat 130 tdi, that did the job but was dull & uninspiring, now replaced with a 156 2.4jtd (150bhp) which looks & sounds great, cheap too !(nothing's fallen off yet ) If you spend a lot of time in the car get something you'll enjoy driving.

For something a bit different how about an Alfa 156 JTD?
Not that big externally, but it seems to have more legroom than a mark 1 Mondeo, not been in one of the huge newer Mondeos so can't say how it compares on that front. Planning on selling mine to get another RX-7, but as a general saloon car I can't fault it, my last tank even returned 46mpg (not too bad for a 2.4) and rumour has it that a remap can take them up to approaching 190bhp.

you could get an 02 Mondeo TDCI 130 for that (I did).
Passats at a reasonable age were far more - £7-8k, and only slightly nicer (and worse handling)
Skoda Superb would be a good buy, but I needed a hatch and they're all saloons
