Tell the guy to stick with 17's and slap on some coilovers.

Tell the guy to do no such thing. 18's are a common mod on 1.8T cars, whether A3, Golf or Octavia.

Having bought a mk4 Golf with 18" wheels, swapping to 17" wheels, made the car handle better, tramline less and increased my acceleration.

18" wheels are a common modification, but that doesn't make it right!

My Octy vRS is on 17's. I've driven one on 18's and preferred it.

Each to their own

It handles better with 17's though, hence me reccomending it. Also the MK1 A3 was a very poor chassis when it came to sporty driving (barring S3) hence the combo of 17's and coilovers.

Octy probably had its suspension fiddled with. Also similiar quality of tires?

The S3 is slow in standard spec. I would stick some 15's on it and slam it.

Have 18"s on my TDI A3 and it looks fab. However ride is a bit hard especially with the lowered springs. Depends what you want more. I hated the original balloon tyres on the standard 15" wheels.
