Looking at it I would doubt the driver lived - they may have remained in one piece but they would have taken a hell of alot of the energy from the impact and I fear their insides would be a bit like mush .......

From the thread on rs246.com:

"What you see is what you get, i.e. there was no cutting of the vehicle prior to the pictures being taken.
It is my brother-in-law that you see holding the mobile phone, he honestly doesn't know the speed that he was going at but wasn't near as fast as he has done in the past on that particular part of the road.

Although the road was completely dry he said that it felt he was on ice and the car just careened into the tree. He actually called the emergency services and climbed out of the car by himself, he spent only a couple of hours in hospital, apart from a few minor scratches he got a bandage around his little finger, I told him if he's not already religious he should take it up ASAP!

The car WAS a pristine RS6 ABT, I was supposed to pick it up that very day to borrow it from him for a week as I've always wanted to try out the ABT version. He really should have simply told me that he didn't want me to drive his car I'm so happy he is alive and all in one piece."

Pleased he survived - but we won't hear the last of it...

@Brendan : you have family in Luxembourg??? Are you often here?
Could you tell me from which town of our little country he is?

Sitting at the source I can say, that this guy had really great luck and wasn't hurt at all (apart from minor scratches perhaps).

I'm just amazed how fast the pics found their way from Luxembourg to the SN

Serge - it was a quote, I didn't write it! The pic source is listed as RS246.com, so I went there and found the thread on it (rather predictably entitled T-cut).

I'm in Portugal, so that's almost Luxembourg (a joke perhaps only you will understand...)

BTW, I don't know much about car construction, but doesn't this seem rather odd? I thought modern cars were built around some sort of safety shell/cell - any such cell here appears to have split down the middle, rather negating its purpose.

The more I think about it, the less I'm impressed.

(Maybe I shouldn't think so much )

Anyone care to comment?

One careful owner, unfortunately registered category c but the damage really was minimal and its been professionally repaired to an exceptional standard...

All the tyres are still inflated, that must score well on a safety rating somewhere

Cars aren't designed to withstand being hurled into trees sideways. If you consider the energy involved with a car at high speed striking a tree exactly sideways (so moments about the tree clockwise/anti-clockwise are equal) there is plenty enough energy to tear it in two. Cars are designed with crumple zones front/rear to cope with about 35mph impacts where the energy can be dissipated over the whole front/rear structure of the vehicle. Side impact protection can only absorb so much energy and I think its safe to say that driver exceeded that limit.

Moral of the story, don't hit trees, especially sideways !

That'll be the great audi steering feel for you

Anyway, what a mess, must've hit that tree at a fair rate of knots.

Also, I bet audilover will come on to say that he'd be dead if it were anything other than an Audi
