£7.9 million audi on sale
Source: AutoExpress
Is this the most expensive car ever sold? The answer is almost certainly yes, if auction house Christie's has its way. The rare GP racer from Audi goes under the hammer this weekend - and is expected to reach £7.88million.
It's a 1939 Auto Union D-Type, one of only two in existence, powered by a 450bhp 12-cylinder supercharged engine and capable of 205mph. An American searched for more than 10 years for the D-Type and its 1938 sister model before eventually finding them stripped down into parts in the former USSR.
Both had been transported there from Germany just after World War II. Potential bidders can view the machine at the Retromobile international vintage car fair in Paris. The car has also been on display at the Audi Forum centre in New York, while the 1938 model was recently shown in Paris. Auto Union, formed in the Thirties, later became known as Audi.

Can't be the most expensive car ever sold though? In clarksons top 100 car book he mentions a Japanese businessman paying £10m for a Ferrari GTO.

Bitsa
This is one of two put together by Crossthwaite & Gardener for two brothers from New York, who collected parts from all over Russia after WW2 and during the Cold War, until they had enough for the two cars, hence the confusion over it's provenance. Audi are assisting with access to the Auto Union factory records, so they can specifically identify the cars that the bits came from.
