There's a very good reason it's a slush box. There were no manuals available back then that could get even close to transmitting the levels of torque that thing produces without grenading
I doubt whether there are even any available today Tremec, possibly?
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with a well set up auto in the right application, a lot of dragsters used (and still use?) the old GM Torqueflight with a Hurst Ratchet shifter, because that way there is no interuption in the flow of power to the rear wheels, and hence no time lost due to loss of traction.
Because you can get the back wheels spinning up to the equivalent of 140mph whilst the car's standing still, they make for pretty impressive burnouts too
