Audi TT
Not everyone's favourite car by any stretch of the imagination but I'm considering treating the Mrs to a new car for Christmas........
Going to look at a car this week 99 v-registration, 225bhp version, done 47K, completely standard with FASH, black leather and a price of £9,500. Seems to be a reasonable price considering the relatively low mileage - any thoughts on what to look out for? I assume their is some documentation I should look for in respect of the recall for the rear spoiler but this will no doubt be self evident if the spoiler is fitted
Bit nervous at buying a car which is nearly 8 years old but seen plenty of these that have done in excess of 100K miles so I'm hoping reliability isn't going to be an issue?
Is there much difference between the early cars and say an 01/02 car?
Due to the age I assume the cambelt should have been changed by now?
And before anyone starts my mrs isn't a hairdresser and neither am I so keep those comments to yourselves

I know the cars were facelifted(slightly)around the end of 2001/start of 2002,but it was only detail changes. Also,at some point i also think the engines changed codes(??)although the power stayed the same.
I must admit that they are really starting to grow on me now that they are depreciating a decent amount(due to the new model),and circa 280bhp is easily and readily available for around £450.
I don't know what your budget is but i have seen a few with sensible miles for around £11,000(advertised prices,so a decent deal should be done for closer to 10k),and these are 2001('51)and even 2002 models,so if it was me,i would spend a bit more and get as later model as possible.
Good luck

Cheers matey
Just missed out on a 2001 car for £10K. I really want to pick something up this week so I can give it to the Mrs for Christmas.
Seems like a set of the 18" RS4 multispoke wheels can be picked up relatively cheaply and these transform the look of the car IMHO.
Any other thoughts, comments, etc will be much appreciated

Is it the Coupe or Roadster?
Two lads i know have had high mileage early Coupes that had a hard life (abused) and were still solid/sweet when they sold them.
I borrowed a mates gf's well looked after '02 Roadster with 35k on the clock the other night and it rattled, squeaked, shook and drove like a dog! Was really suprised, it was a massive step down in quality from the coupes imo. Avoid!

Car I'm looking at is a the coupe not the roadster, not really interested in convertables as we don't get the weather to use them enough
Seen another nice looking example in denim blue - not sure I like the interior though as it's blue leather and alcantara (spl?) - looks a bit pimptastic Will have to see what it's like in the flesh.
What's servicing costs like - I assume servicing is like the bmw/merc and the computer counts down in mileage to the next service?

Just a few words, I have just bought a SLK 320 for my wife (50,000 miles FSH etc) in brilliant silver with black leather.
We looked at the Audi TT (which I like very much - it has aged well), but my wife went for the SLK as the electric roof is a great novelty, and I have been suprised how much we have the roof down, even though we live in rural Shropshire, very close to the Welsh border, and we all know it is always raining in Wales
The TT looks great in black or silver, not so keen on the blue.
Cool car.

TT problems...
The usual coilpack issues with the VAG 1.8T engine.....
Dash pod failure - Look on the TT forum for early symptoms etc. NOT cheap to fix and if it goes, you lose all dials, displays, clocks etc.

My wife has a TT225 Roadster (she's not a hairdresser!) & loves the car. It's a W Reg (2000) with high miles (105k). Had no problems to speak of having owned the car for 18 months. Servicing is same as any VW ie reasonable. We've had a few performance cars over the years (GTi6, ITR, Scoob WRX STi V) & she likes it as much as them.

Pretty solid cars they are. Plenty about for sale also so you have plenty of choice. Servicing costs are pretty good compared to mercs and bmw's. A solid car for the wifey which still looks great to this day.Coil packs are a issue, but not overly expensive to fix and there was a recall about them so hopefully most cars on the market today wont have any issues.

I had a 02 plate tt in blue coupe, done 35k and was a very nice car. i had it 2 months and audi changed the dash pod under warranty cause the fuel guage didnt read correct, and i put a hego on it. but other than that i thought it was a nice motor.

That's identical to the one I bought yesterday
It's got blue leather and alcantar interior, bit pimptastic for me but hopefully the mrs will like it
Must admit, the car felt incredibly underpowered, nice and smooth but certainly not quick. Think I'm spoilt though as the acceleration in my ra is brutal so not much compares.
The 0nly fault was that the ESP light on the dash came on for no reason - hoping it's just a faulty sensor or something.
Cheers again,
Chris

My mate had a Leon Cupra and the ESP light was on virtually the whole time he owned the car and it turned out to be a sensor somewhere which i think cost him about £100 to sort out.
If it's a 225 then they are quite smooth in their power delivery(i had a Leon Cupra R 225),however it is easily and relatively cheap to sort,it's called a Custom Code Remap

Rah, hoping it is just a sensor and nothing major......... already been thinking of a remap

Erm, because I've already bought a TT now
Would love to get an S2000 but don't think you'll find a very good one for £9-10K

And get it serviced at a VAG specialist.
My remapped Octavia vRS has always been serviced by Star Performance. Half the cost of a Skoda dealer
