Anyone know how to tell the different between VW Golf TDI and a GT TDI because i thought the GT TDI had the 6 speed gearbox???
Could anyone help me with this????
Or was it a certain year that the 6 speed gearbox came in???

Isn't there a VW forum you could try. You may get a more sensible answer there.

Not all gt tdis have the 6 speed gearbox. AFAIK only the 115, 130 and 150's have the 6 speed. The 110 gt tdis have 5. The gt has a better trim, alloys etc over the normal tdis. Most of the normal golfs will be either 90 or 100 bhp, the gt's will at least have 110. If you can get a 6 speeder over a 5 then get one, really handy on motorways. Normal 90 and 100 bhp golfs are quite slow, suitable for my gf though as I've got her one.

The old 110 is pre-PD and has an old style injector pump. They dont have the rush of torque like the PD engined cars, they have a more linear power delivery.
They are also far less refined than the later PD engines so dont expect modern diesel levels of noise.
On the big plus side the 90/110 TDi VAG engines still holds the record for the most thermally efficient car engine.
60mpg is easy as long as you dont mind the lack of performance or refinement.
They do respond well to the cheap tuning boxes, a dragon box will give 140bhp for a couple of hundred quid.
Cheers

So, there's not much mechanical difference between a 90 tdi and a gt tdi? Was thinking of upping the power from the very weedy 90 bhp, it feels VERY slow compared to my last two gt tdis.

The 90 is not as tuneable and the lack of VNT means it has more lag and a doesn't spool up as quick as the 110bhp.
Some later 90's had the VNT system but I'm sure these were limited to certain Skoda's and Seat's.
You will get about 110bhp and 250NM from a tuning box on a 90bhp VAG which would offer similar peformance to a standad 110bhp model but without the bottom end performance and faster response of the VNT 110 Turbo.
Fit a tuning box to a 110bhp TDi and you would be looking around 140bhp and 270NM.

The easy way is to look at the V5 for the car in question (or original dealer bill of sale) it will clearly state GT TDi on that and if you are still unsure take the chassis number and check it .

They may have a GT badge, but they handle like a wooden spoon in a bowl of porridge.
I tested the 150PD after I had to sell the R32 and was horrified at the tragic handling - One of the worst hatches I have ever driven!

150PD was mk4 only.
Mk5 is a totally different car - VW nicked the Focus chassis engineer for the mk5 and it worked!
You got the Petrol 1.4 S'charged GT or the diesel GT?
Both fine cars.

I've got the 140bhp diesel version and very happy. Obviously not a patch on my old WRX in terms of 0-60 but didn't buy it for that but to step down to something more comfy/refined and economical.
On the twisties I actually reckon it's just a quick (the way I drive it). Plenty of midrange torque and smooth with it.
Interesting fact about the engineering of the chassis.

The high torque really does keep your speed up if you drive it properly.
I just avoid drag races now!

lol, i did miss those drop the clutch occations in the scoob... blimey it used to take off like nothing else.
at the moment i can't justify a really fast petrol car for commuting to work - it's just a waste with the ever increasing crap gridlock these days. I like the comfort and decent stereo in this car
