Default BMW Diesel Chipping

Just got a 530D - really great car and much better dynamically than my previous RS4. Of course it is about 200bhp down on the RS4 so was considering chipping it. Has anyone here done this and can recommend a supplier? E Maps seem to be competitively priced...?

Cheers

Tunit Performance - diesel performance tuning with over 1000 applications

I have used these for my last 2 dervs. I was had my first derv mapped by 3 different companys 2 were pouring smoke out and the other blew my ecu up!!! the tunit module has adjustable power using the numbered dial 1-9 and either diy fit or they will fit for a small fee. If you want more power or you have modded etc they can map them live on the road in your car and it is removable in less than 15 minutes by yourself if need be. Also, come trade in time they will part ex it for the model for your car, so all's good really.

I also noticed an inprovement of 2 mpg which was nice.

I would only take the car to DMS or maybe try West Tuning, both are located near Andover.

DMS have always had rave reviews from all the BMW mags, and also Evo mag,who have tested a few of their "products".

You won't go wrong with e-maps, had my 535d re-mapped by Simon. Great guy and a great product.

Make sure you know the downsides before you do it though. I am a fan of re-maps but on the x30d you have to make sure its not too much. Get the inlet manfiold checked before they do the work. If its looking a bit old might be worth replacing it - esp the butterfly and various bits like that. I now know of maybe 5 or 6 people who have had their turbo and intercooler FUBARd by bits of the manifold coming off. If its out of warranty then its a big bill at a BMW dealer - almost 2k IIRC.

Other than that its a great engine and should take the power no problems.

Thanks for the advice guys, very useful.

Guess I'm learning about Diesels now, but performance exhausts seem non-existent for them? I'd be loathe to replace current system with a bog standard and no doubt overpriced BMW unit wghen it fails. Do such aftermarket things exist? I'll never forget the fab improvement from fitting the Scoobysport downpipe on my STi once after all!

Diesel,

Milltek do a backbox for the *30d, but not a full system. For chipping, I'd suggest DMS as the preferred tuner.

Glad you're essentially enjoying the dynamics of the car. I've been banging on about them for years and not many people believe that dynamically a BMW knocks the cr4p out of Audi, Subaru, Mercedes etc!

Cheers

I have a 51 C32 AMG at the mo, approx 340 BHP and 340 torque. Would a DMSed 535D be as fast as that?

Matt can only find one for an M5 from Miltek?

I'm REALLY impressed with the dynamics! It aint Scooby beating but the car has such poise and aplomb whatever the road surface and pace. Mine's the Sport vers and it is quite comfy but barely rolls when you chuck it in. Hugely impressed [did I mention that]

I think that as a 535D has 282BHP as standard,it chips up to about 330-340BHP,so the power would be the same, but with a huge amount more Torque than your AMG.

I know i drove one in February before i wasted my time with an E46 M3,and deeply regret not buying the 535D as it felt fatser, pulled like a train and would do 30mpg.Driving down a motorway slip road at approximately 60mph,by the time i pulled onto the m-way and reached the fast lane it was doing 135mph

Deep,

A DMS'd 535d has about 320-340bhp and over 500ft/lbs of torque. They will crack on to about 170mph. Monster mid-range sees most things off. With the C32, I suspect that it may be close to 100, but then the BMW would begin to get the legs on the Mercedes.

I'd love a 535d Sport and the 2004 cars are coming down in price. I've currently cut back on my car outlay as we're moving house. Once settled, I suspect that I may be back in the market.

Paul,

I made the same faux pas with an M3. It was a lovely car, but not really any better than the 330d I p/x'd for it. Wish I'd stayed with the 330d! Still, you live and learn.

Thanks. I don't need a car faster than my C32, as I don't drive that fast anymore, but don't want to 'step down' to something slower if you see what I mean. M5s are expensive, may have some real reliabilty issues and can average 10-15mpg! Maybe a DMSed 535d sport for £25-£30k is a serious option then.

I doubt you will find one yet for near 25k,although once you get to 30k i am sure you will have a choice, especially once you make an offer.....................afterall,there are very few people willing to spend that sort of money on a car privately(one of the reasons i lost so much on my M3),

Definately drive one though, they are awesome

Yes, I've had a closer look and they start at £30k, but then the spec isn't great. I've got used to all the toys on the C32 so need them again. I specced a car on the bmw site and to get all the toys I have now ie electric heated everything/satnav/leather/sounds it comes to £47k!!

I test drove once of those 535 Deep - really great car and a nice 2 stage DSC control that kept the nanny in check! It is a lot more money however for a few more Lb Ft - esp if you have slowed down with old age [llike me] Coming from a 438 bhp car I am reasonably happy with this 530's pull below 60. And at 40mpg its halved my fuel cost [ish...] D
